Proud Dad! Need answers on tire size.

My daughter just bought herself a 2010 6 spd manual 4x4 Tacoma with 13k in miles for $20,600. She loves my Tacoma and has always wanted one and now she has one of her own. I raised her well



The tires on the truck are crap, Dunlops Grandtrek AT20? I want to get her some new tires for her birthday but don't know what is the largest size I can put on her wheel.

The tire size that is on the truck now is a 245/75R16. I want to get her a 265/75R16 Duratrac or Firestone Destination, which is the tire size on my Tacoma. I have no issues with this size.

Can someone educate me on whether these will fit or not?

She should be fine on the 265/75/16s you might have to remove the front mud flaps. But one thing she has the sr5 wheels so it may be different I don't know the back spacing on those.

 

The tire size will clear everything. I'm just not sure about putting the wider tire on the steel rim. I'm 99% sure it will mount up fine but I'm sure someone will post up and confirm.

 

265/75R16 should fit no problem.

I see you live in a snowy area, and these are a great all around tire, 10 ply as well! I have only had them on my Taco for about a month, but have had no issues on ice or snow like I did with those Dunlops! They are pricey, but worth it! My dad also has them on his Duramax and we have made a few trips to Arizona and back towing 8,000lbs and they still look practically new! Are quiet on the road too, and ride smoother than the Dunlops.

 

The stock steelies are 7" wide. It looks like this guy had no problem with the upgrade.

I made the same size change in my truck, but with the alloys. I would think 10ply is a little stiff? I got Goodyear Wrangler RT/S and have been very happy with wear and snow handling.

go with the 265/65/ 16 or 17...i think 75 is too high for the aspect ratio. 265 is the width and 65 would be the height.

 

I just put on 265/75/16 DuraTrac's on my truck and love them. They are a little noisy, but what do you expect from something of that tred pattern? They grip amazing in the snow and mud and I only saw a little decrease in MGP. And on top of all of the grip, the make the truck look awesome .

 

I don't know how wide the steel rim is and in some cases the tires can be too wide for the rim. With a 265 series tire it's very doubtful that it's too wide but rather than talk out of my ass because I really don't know for certain, I threw in the disclaimer

 

265/70/16s are a stock size. They will be same OD as the 245/75/16s but a bit wider. Just did this swap on my prerunner. No issues whatsoever. Made a noticeable improvement on how the truck's handling feels.

I am running 265X70R-16s without issue on stock 16X7 steel wheels. This size is near identical height to the tires she has now, so no speedometer error. Check the decal inside of the drivers door for her wheel size. I expect it is 16X7 as well. Use the "Tire Size Calculator" at the bottom of page for comparing tire sizes.

You will find few here that will not agree with you about the Dunlops, trash.

 

I taught both my daughters and my 2 stepsons how to drive stick. I told them it was a right of passage to getting there driver's license. My daughter told me the best thing about having a manual transmission car is that none of her friends ever ask her to borrow her vehicle because none of them no how to drive a stick.

 

I got the yokohama geolander 265/70/16. I was about to trade it back for silent armors or bfg. Decided to keep these and had it siped again. To get the stiffer sidewalls that I originally wanted, I had discount tire bump the psi to 40. It rides way better than 30 psi in my opinion. As I dont do any off roading, I just stuck with these.

 

I just recently went with 265/70/16 Silent Armors. Way happy with them. Drove 70+ testing them out in full on rainstorm with lots of water on the freeway the other day. No, not in traffic. Out in my own space. Not during rush hour, duhhhhh. Anyway, changing lanes and just driving along felt just like it wasn't even raining and this was complete monsoon where the wipers were on fast and starting to not be fast enough. I could feel the resistance caused by how much water was on the road but never felt a bit of the tires wanting to hydroplane at all. I was impressed. Was just trying to see where the line was with them. A need to know kind of thing. Obviously the hydroplane line was up higher than I ever need to be driving in that kind of weather. Nice.
