Agreed. If we cannot properly handle firearms then we do not deserve to have them in our possession. It is the stupid and/or careless that have mishaps.

Will a satellite phone function if SHTF? I'm trying to find a way to communicate with my wife at distance if something happens. I would think there would be a break in the link of the satellite signal somewhere if the grid shut down.

depends on what the mishap is. if it's an EMP, i would say it wouldn't work. more than likely, i'd say it wouldn't work, because, like you said, there would be a break somewhere.

I too have been thinking of this....if satellites go down for any extended amount of time how will we communicate? I have been looking into CB's and Ham Radios for the truck

CB's and HAM radios would be great. I'm looking to get one for my truck and a few hand held, just in case.

all of my friends/family have a plan and they all know what to do in the event of SHTF/no communication, we're all meeting at the same place and as long as i'm with them im not worried about talking to anyone untill the dust settles

Fairly impressed so far with the attempts on this show. What they fail to have is an equipped all terrain capable vehicle capable of hauling ace. :) taco ftw!

Smoke signals........ and carrier pigeon......old fashoned (air Mail):D, morse code via signal mirror. the only prob with mirrors is u have to have direct line of sight. smoke lets every one,(and every Zombie, Just for u zombie runner) know where u are from distance. so the best is pigeon, although you would have to pre train the pigeon to know the location of the message delivery. and once someone finds the drop point, u have start from sqaure 1

Satellites have years worth of fuel, with multiple ground stations, all with backup generators, so I would guess they would still work so long long as the SHTF scenario wasn't caused by a solar flair, and your handset wasn't damaged. If the ground stations controlling it went down, communication may still work (don't know one way or the other), but the orbit would decay within a few weeks to a few months. CB and HAM radio would still be the more reliable bet.

the ground stations are operated by a human, correct? if SHTF and these operators bail, the ground stations will no longer be operative, therefore the working satellites won't do us any good. with the ground stations inoperative, the link from ground to satellite will be broken.

    am i making sense?
