Rear Shocks.... Need some guidance

So I got a TJM lift awhile ago almsot 7 months ago, the front went smooth!

The rear was a different story, the first set of shocks they sent me were the same size LOL


So they sent me another pair no problem!


Well I just got my truck back from the body shop after being hit by a drunk what a great time to put them in!


Well I break my old shock getting it out, the top piece used to hold it, to get the nut off and it snapped. So I had to fight with it to get it out but I got it!!!

I was like yess!!!!

So I go to throw my new ones in,

I notice the bottom (base) the bushings are a tad bit big in two ways, they stick out a 1/4 inch on each side, and the bushing hole is bigger then the bolt. But I was like well they sent it to me so I'm sure it will work, on a side note I noticed another set of bushings that look like they would fit the bolt. So I grabbed them and they do but there is NO way these would fit into the base, as the base is semi beveled if that makes since and these are straight.

So I try to put it in and it doesn't seem like these are going to go in at all...


The bushings stick out about a 1/4 to far on each side, now maybe if I lube it up and beat it in, it might work but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do that.


I called demello to verify I had the right part by part number but time difference I'm sure they are not even open yet.\



So my truck sits in the garage doing nothing.


Advice?

Yeah guess I'm going to have to, part of me wants to beat it in.


However I am refraining from doing that....right now.



I'm just soooo frustrated I finally got my truck back after almost two months.... I was so happy to get it back drive it and what not, figured since I'm off today it would be a great day to do it and then bam like a train hit me haha


Oh well everything happens for a reason!

 

i had to beat my OME N182's in with a rubber mallet on my 06, but they weren't a quarter inch too big on either side

 

I know what you mean about wanting everything to come together. Just step back and breath. Make darn sure they sent the right parts before tearing something up.

 

You are talking about the bottom of the shock, the bushings don't want to fit into the mounts?

I may be stretching it a little, it may not be a full quarter inch.

It may be smaller, but it seems almost to big to pound in, although I think I could do it....

How big was the inside of the bushing on yours? Did the bolt fit nicely or was the hole bigger then the bolt? Thats another thing that bothers me.

My last lift everything went smooth (XJ Jeep), everything lined up so this is throwing me off...

 

That's the whole reason I haven't beaten it into place yet hahaha

I had a helluva time fitting my 5100's into the bottom mount too, i used a block of wood and a hammer to work them in, i may have put a little grease on them to lube it too

 

IF it's the right part and they say do it, I will not sure if it will make it. But I'll try like hell and feel a lot better!

 

The bushings do not fit in securely they easily fall out to btw










This is it without the bushing in, it fits with very very small amount of play

OK, IF that indeed is the right part number, then I would put something in that bushing to keeps it's shape, put it in a bench vise and grind down the bushing say less than an 1/8 of an inch on either side, maybe less, i seem to recall doing the same thing to mine. My feeling was that i was gonna mess it up but i've put 10k on the truck since then with no problems whatsoever. I ended up using a block of wood against the metal part and having to pound than bastard in sideways and a little from the top down to get it into place.

 

The important thing is that you don't have metal on metal, as you pound it, the bushing will compress and you will probably have to tap the bolt through as well, you want to make sure the holes are lined up good so that when you tap the bolt in you don't thrash the threads on the other mount on the way through

I took my time doing it, grind a little, try to install it, go back, grind a little more, i think i pounded on the mount a little to flare it out a bit more too, little of this, little of that

 

how pound on the mount!!!

Ok after going and looking at it again there is no way I can even get it started without cutting it....


If I cut the inside of one of them I can prob make it work.

I took one out, pounded the other one farther in (gently) so it was actually in the space of where the other one went it was a snug fit, so if I cut down the other one it should fit pretty well..


Still waiting on their call.



Also think it's kind of dumb that we have to cut bushing to make them fit. If it was for a different vehicle I would understand but buying shocks made for our trucks then having to cut it down is a little absurd....
