Hey Floridans. I posted up here a while back, but I'll try again... I'm being transferring to Jacksonville (well, Mayport actually) here in a couple of months. I'm coming down next weekend to do a little recon/house hunting. Just thought I'd touch base with you locals that know the area well... Any advice would be appreciated.

    Here's what I'm looking for:
3 bed, 2 - 2 1/2 bath, Garage (of course), fenced yard (for the dog), safe area (for the wife and kid). Looking for around 1300 sq ft and my price range is $900-$1100. I'd like my commute to stay under 30 min to Naval Station Mayport.

If any of you could point me in the right direction, or suggest a realtor that helps with rentals, that'd be awesome. Looking forward to getting to a place where some TW memebers actually meet up and have G2G and build days!

Thanks! Hope to meet some of y'all soon!

CBI bolt on sliders. BSP color matched M1 Satoshi grill. BHLM. UWS low profile black powder coat crosover truckbox. Pioneer DVD/CD head unit - 4 channel amp - front mids & highs - 8" sub box.
The Beaches area would be most ideal for the commute. Basically that's anything east of the inter coastal waterway. You have your choice of Neptune, Atlantic or Jax Beach.
If you want to be closer in town (west of the ICW) then I would suggest Arlington - Southside or the Mandarin area of town. Jacksonville is very spread out and each area has it's bad spots. You are getting pretty far out on the Westside, Northside and Orange Park areas, so I wouldn't worry about looking there.

If you get here and find something interesting post up the address and I'll try and tell you how the neighborhood is. I have lived here for over 40 years and know the places to stay away from ;)

    Good luck!!

The Atlantic Beach one is a good location. The other two are in the older parts of Arlington and personally I would avoid that area. Not that it's terribly bad but it seems the crime rate over there has increased over the past few years. The closer you get to the ICW the better off you'll be in Arlington or Southside.

Is your kid in school yet?? That's something else to consider also.

that's exactly what i would've guessed. it's the "cool" thing to do, but absolutely useless.

theres quite a few neighbor hoods in the st johns bluff east and south of beach blvd. anything in the area of kernan, hodges, gervin, are 90% good places to live, just a little high on traffic at some times of the day. but they leave you quick access to the base in a reasonable time. these areas have the zip codes of 32246, 32225, and 32224. Most people who live out here in mandarin are stationed at NAS Jax.

We do have one kid, but he's only 7 weeks old, so we won't have to worry about school for him the whole time we're there. I just want a nice safe place for my wife and kid. Somewhere they can go for a walk or the park or something and not have to be looking over their shoulder...:spy:

Manderin is probably the "safest" area in Jacksonville. Only place with less crime is probably Fruit Cove/St. Johns

anywhere off kernan, san pablo, hodges are all turning into really nice places. Also its close to the base and traffic isnt that bad going back and forth to the base. Manderin is really nice also but its a good drive from mayport.
