You are saying that ABS is a complete fluke and that years of R&D are completely wrong??.......... first off... locking up your brakes is the worst thing you can do when you need to brake.... second of all the abs pumps so fast that it actually helps in keeping your vehicle stable while hard braking is required... more than likely you were going to fast down your driveway and you put yourself in that situation....

I'm killing mine just because I don't need it, or want it. I was driving for decades before I ever owned a vehicle with ABS. In fact, it was quite a while before I even had disk brakes! Probably my first 4 or 5 vehicles were 4 wheel drum brakes. Somehow I survived that horrible condition just fine. No air bags, VSC, nothing. To my way of thinking the ABS has absolutely no purpose, wet or dry. It was designed for people who have no interest in learning how to drive, and who's only reaction is to stomp the brakes at every panic situation. There isn't a skilled driver anywhere who drives better with any of that crap. They tell you this hooey about the computer making 100 zillion calculaions a second, but it's still not as good as even a moderately trained foot.

ABS and VSC have their place in keeping the vehicle under control at higher speeds on DRY pavement , they are a hinderance on snow

Going back to the post #1, I have had the almost the exact same experience.

This may not even apply to a lot of people on this forum; but for some of us that encounter ice and snow, it is hazardous.

I have had numerous vehicles with ABS; and most work about the same. Though, they are not exactly alike.

I bought my 08 Tacoma, TRD Off Road, in December, in a snow storm; and I immediately felt that I didn't have as much control as I did on the previous vehicle' that I just traded in. Actually, I almost wrecked, on a street that I drive every day; and had driven every day with the old vehcle.
Just as post #1 portrayed his experience; the Tacoma would not stop; as well as my other vehicle.

As I said, I am not new to ABS, I even worked on some of the earlier versions. So I know how the system should work, in theory.

In dry or even rainy conditions; no problem. Let the road get icy or snow covered and the Tacoma does not stop as well as some other vehicles.

And also: I use Winter Ice and Snow tires. Bridgstone Blizzax, and now Cooper Weathermaster. The Tacoma was deadly with the original stock tires, in snow.

It is not my imagination. In snow or ice; the Tacoma is not the safest truck to stop; compared to other 4x4's.

........if you can't drive. Go to any SCCA race and see how many are using any of that. All of it decreases control at high speeds and lowers track speeds.

Its easy for me to get my ABS to come on when I'm driving on dry pavement. I don't think I've ever had the ABS kick in when driving any other vehicle, period. With that being said, it's usually very easy for me to predict when the Tacoma ABS will kick in.

After reading this post. I actually went out and tried to make my abs kick in.
I did get it to kick in on a gravel road. But I didn't get any warning lights or a buzzer. No ABS light, Bleeps or blinks. NOTHING.
I got a slight humming sound and a bouncing brake pedal.
It felt like someone was tapping on the bottom of my foot. ( That is the ABS working)

First I tried to get it to kick in from a roll with just the truck idle speed.
I could NOT get it to kick in. It just locked the wheels up and slid for a half second and stopped.

Then I got it to about 5 mph and got the ABS to kick in.
I heard a humming noise and the brake pedal started bouncing and clicking.
That is Normal for ABS. I did NOT feel it loose a lot of brake pressure like some have experienced.

I also tried this at about 10 mph. Same thing happens as it does at 5mph.

I did find that it took a good slam on the brakes to make it come on.
I could tell that the truck was about to skid right about the time the ABS came on.

I guess at least I know the ABS is working in my truck.
Feels about like all the other ABS systems I tried.

    P.S. I have a 2007 Tacoma, V6, Auto, TRD Off-Road

The Tacoma is a very solid truck in the summer. It is a horrible truck in the winter due to the ABS system and super light composit bed. definitely the worst vehicle I have ever driven or been around as far as icy roads and ABS are concerned...and I have lived in snow my whole life. There is ice on the roads and intersections for at least five months of the year where I live, and it's usually below 15 degrees so that ice is super slick. This truck is embarrassing to drive around with buddies or girlfriends when the ABS is kicking in at stop signs. Even though u know it will kick in so you go super slow, apply as little pressure as possible, and barely apply more pressure ten feet from the intersection /stop sign....grgrgrgrgrgr, it kicks in and skids to a stop making that stupid grgrgrgrgrgr noise. People are asking WTF was that shit! ABS, duh! Dangerous, annoying, hate it! Then after that happens, your stopped now, finally, everyones OK, you need to get going again. The pass. Rear tire AT tire spins out for the first twenty feet, barely giving it gas, and can barely make it to the next stop sign! It is much better with sandbags and obviously 4x4, but in 17 years of driving icy roads, in pickups and cars, I have never had to use sandbags or 4x4 around flat town areas just to get going from a standstill on ice!

Sorry for the RANT, but, the Tacoma is awesome in the summer, horrible in winters where the average high for the day is 15.....at least the snowboarding here is top notch, and I don't have drive to do that very often. Just walk out my front door to a lift:D
