will it work? has anyone successfully installed a pop & lock on an 09 with the rearview camera?

Thanks for question - wondering same.
The rear view camera is on right (passenger) side of tailgate handle (where I think the pop & Lock would be placed)

I know it is a bit late, but I just installed my PL5300... not as easy as it looked, but it took my about 1 hr, taking my time. I did notice that the camera is no longer aligned. I just posted a question on how to align it, but I'm guessing, I'll just have to live with a little skewness. It works, and not a lot of work. They wanted to charge $80, but I do not think they could have done it better than I did. I'm now drinking the money I saved.

The PL5300 is designed to have the camera on the other side of the handle. Bad instructions, but with some time, it is easy to figure out. Like I mentioned before, the cam is not pointing straight out anymore, I was wondering if there is a way to calibrate it.

09' here, took me about an hour as well a year ago. Camera relocates to the left of the new handle for some reason. As far as alignment, I swore the little camera slid into an indentation that was already there on the new handle. The handle had a pop-out on it, and then the camera had a small screw on it that mounted to the new handle. It has been a while though.

I can tell you that the quality of the pop-n-lock is not that great, faded already, and mechanism seems sticky. I also remember when relocating, the camera the kit included a couple of zip ties that you use to zip the wires to the new relocated routing.

Hope this helps, I am scared to do anything most of the time on my truck, and I did it in an hour with no issues.

Of course, there are two versions of the Pop & Lock - the electronic (remote keyless entry system) version (PL8521) and the manual (keyed) version (PL5300). While both versions work with the backup camera, they install and work quite differently. The electronic version uses the existing tailgate handle, without messing with the camera. The manual version replaces the existing tailgate handle, with the backup camera moved to that new handle.

Installed the electronic version on my 2012 double cab, connected to the passenger side door lock wiring (two clicks of the remote to unlock). The installation took about two hours, but I work very slowly (getting old) and took extra time to move both sets of wiring (backup camera & lock) into the same split plastic sleeve for a cleaner looking install.

    G'day all,

Installed a Pop & Lock PL5300 ( camera version) yesterday; simple and quick. The camera works perfectly. The original position of the camera is on the passenger side of the OEM tailgate handle. The camera position in the Pop & Lock changes to the Drivers side of the handle. I saw no difference in picture in the rear view mirror when activated. The only"adjustment I felt necessary tp the PL5300 was to enlarge the holes the red and black plastic hold clips go in to ever so slightly. Initially movement was a little stiff, but a few swipes with a round file eradicated the problem.

    Cheers

How hard was it to wire the new lock? did you have to drill new holes and how does it connect to the interior locking system? Any clues or links to a video would be greatly appreciated.

Just as easy to install the electronic version (no new holes). One bolt (one of the existing bolts for the tailgate handle) to hold the locking mechanism in place and run the wires over the vehicle frame to the passenger seat area. Keep wires away from hot exhaust pipe and/or moving parts. Again, I took extra time to move both sets of wiring in the tailgate (backup camera & lock) into the same split plastic sleeve for a cleaner looking install (visible between tailgate and vehicle).

Next, look for a large rubber grummet under vehicle near the passenger seat (about six to eight inches from edge of vehicle, just behind front bracket for seat). Spread that rubber grummet open with a screwdriver and feed the wires with plastic sleeve through to the vehicle interior (nice to have help here pulling from inside as you feed from under the vehicle).

Pop off plastic covers (doorsilll panel pulls up, foot side panel has knob and pulls towards back). Towards the front of that now visible cluster of wires, look for two wires (blue/pink and blue/black) feeding into a large white connector (the pink is actually an ugly shade of red approaching pink). Those are the two wires you want to connect to. I used my own tap connectors instead of those included with the kit (the included ones truly suck).

Test everything. If the tailgate locks when you unlock the vehicle (and vice versa), reverse the two wires in the tailgate. Finally, put the covers back on and go for a joyride knowing your tailgate is now reasonably secure.

If you search this forum for "Pop & Lock" or "tailgate lock," you'll see several threads with images, along with followup comments from others describing the electronic version.

Thank you very much for the explanation, it sounds do-able. I will start looking for one. It took me 2 months to get the PL5300 here in Canada.
