    Good info!

I'm with acdronin on low end power. I've also got a shell and lots of tools so I'm pretty heavy even when unloaded. The truck has plenty of power and I can get the tires lit up if I want to, but for just everyday driving, it seems almost hesitant to get up and go unless you really put your foot into it. Just cruising along, if you want a slight acceleration, it still requires the engine to downshift, it doesn't want to slowly pick up speed at cruising RPM. Just my $0.02. I don't think the truck is underpowered per say, it's done exceptionally well towing and hauling so far but if I could get some extra power in the low end for every day driving, it would be a welcomed addition.

I am not sure about the the MAF Cal specifically starts making adjustments per the tuning, but I do think it worthy for someone to ask Gadget. That way the information is as accurate as possible.

Only reason that i say that, is because WOT is after the necessary percent of throttle depression to get the ECU to go into open loop. That being IF, it tunes in Open Loop only.I also cannot remember specifically where open loop occurs based off of TPS value. Whether that be 40, 50 or 60%?

I have a ScanGauge II, and can check on the way home today. It will give a relatively close idea, by selecting TPS and Loop.

Toyota wouldn't purpsely design their engine, for aftermarket companies to benefit off of it. And if they do have any power add on's that they know about, but the cost of manufacturing a ton of them and adding it on the assembly line, then there's TRD. Did you ever hear of a TRD throttle body spacer? Or a TRD manifold spacer? Nah brah

No. Never heard of TRD. I have heard of AFe and Eaton though. ;)

Why didn't Nissan, with their VQ motors for the 350Z and G35/37, add the intake manifold spacer, or make the intake a little taller? When they clearly knew from testing that two of the cylinders for their motor were not getting enough air flow compared to the rest, and under modding, a problem would present itself. I don't know. I am not an engineer or accountant for Nissan.

Thus Skunk2 came up with a solution. Manifold spacer. In the link I posted earlier. With dyno results for that motor.

Of course a company would overdesign their engine. An engine capable of handling 500 HP but only putting out 250 would last a lot longer than an engine pushed to it's limit and operating at the high end all the time. When you start pushing more and more power out of an engine, tolerances need to be tighter and things tend to break easier (in extreme cases of course).

Just to be clear the MAF Cali comes into play in open loop, not WOT, as you've said. I thought I read the WOT is considered >90%, but can't cite it now, oh Scanguage.......

    Not doing 18's because I have 20's.

But once I install that manifold spacer back on my truck, and make some jaw-some torque, I will hit up HRE or Rotiform for some fatties to fit those 335's. Lol

There's a tear in my eye. A little bit of REAL tech talk and debate on tacomaworld.

I came over from the mustang community. I had my 66 and my 99, sold them both to get my truck. Intake manifold spacers are nothing new. There are many a company that makes them. From all I have seen and read, they serve their purpose. From all I have seen they bring your tq curve down lower and or increase it. It's also one of the few mods that give more power and better mpg's. Kind of like underdrive pullies, a few free hp and better mpg's.

I had many a dynoday when I had my stangs. My 99 was an auto. Most of my dyno's started at 2000 rpm BUT I had the ability through the tuner to lock the converter and keep the tranny from down shifting. I had a 3000 stall in that car so under 2500 rpm's I really didn't care about. Now on my dd truck, it's a diff ball of wax. I don't think your going to be able to get a super low rpm start point without the tranny down shifting or haveing "blips" in the graph from the converter locking or unlocking.

Hmm... Let's just say that one of these definitely does work. I am adding headers to my truck here really soon. Would this mani spacer combined with LT headers essentially raise my entire power curve?

It is fun, isn't it? I am a little concerned as well about that fact with the auto. Luckily, I have other friends with the same truck that live close enough.

From what was able to gather from my ScanGauge was this:

1, going past 30% throttle would put you into Open Loop. No matter 2k RPMs or higher. Cannot believe that I forgot that. :(

2, even being at 27% throttle, when I passed around 3400 RPMs, it still went into Open Loop.

For those unaware of what the difference is between Open Loop and Closed Loop is, it is pretty simple.

Closed Loop means that there is feed-back going on between the sensors. Mainly MAF and WRAF. That data is constantly being read and adjustments are being made. Open Loop means NO feed-back. It basically runs off of a pre-determined MAP for fueling and timing.

With that kind of philosophy, why didnt they put headers, and a catback exhaust and a Superchips programmer in it too? Oh, cuz they make no power either? There must be absolutley no way to improve the HP and power of these trucks, guess you guys all better be happy with what you have then. LOL :p

Cat back isnt good, as there are noise restrictions the manufactures have to meet. Also, most cat backs only give about 5 hp.
Superchips programmers dont work on the Tacoma.
    headers are expensive.

So...Can more power be gained? Sure. At the expense of longevity, perhaps.

By leaning the A/F ratio, you can get a few more Hp. And thats what an APR X1 and MAF Calibrator do. IIRC, The APR can adjust timing a bit also, for a bit more power.

Regardless, everything comes at a price.

Look, I wont sit and try to convince you guys with no Toyota data, I will get it made, do testing and then see what you guys think. I know for a fact they work on other vehicles, like my Nissan. There are literally several hundreds of these on Nissan Frontiers, Xterras, Pathfinders, Maximas, and Altimas out there making power. I may have jumped the gun posting this thread before having one ready, but I was guaging the market to see if there was interest. I have tons of happy customers running them, anyone who is not running them cannot conclusively say they dont work.
