Need help deciding on speakers

I know asking for help choosing speakers can be a bit subjective, but I've narrowed it down to these three and would like to know if anyone has any experience with them or could offer some advice regarding speaker selection. These will be powered only by a pioneer deck..no amp yet. Thanks for taking a look. Oh yeah, it's for a first gen if that matters, and just the fronts/tweeters

The Polks have the highest sensitivity of those you listed, a big plus running off of HU power. If I were shopping from Crutchfield with the same price range I would be looking at THESE SPEAKERS.

I would actually take the Focals off of that list, as I realized their sensitivity rating is based on 2.83V not 1 watt. If it were me I would focus on the Polk db521 or the DXi525. They look eerily similar based on their specs.

 

why 5.25 instead of 6.5? just bc?

 

i don't think 6.5's will fit in the OP's ride. he's got a 1st gen i think.

aside from separates, the polk mm (mobile monitors) are some of the best car audio speakers i've heard. if i could afford them, i would go with them in a heartbeat. they do sound even better when powered with a very clean amp, but even so, that would be my starting point.

 

1st gen's take a 6.5 speaker

 

If that is true, the OP should look at the Polk db651. The can be had for something like $70 on Amazon.

 

I just picked out the speakers crutch field said fit. From what I've researched the 1st gens have an odd size up front that can be replaced with a few different sizes. I will take a closer look into Polk though thanks

 

Nothing special about Polk, but in your price range it is what I would go with, though everyone's ears are different. Just make sure you focus on speakers with a high (92+ db) sensitivity. That is also not a magic number, but I know there are quite a few speakers in your price range that fit that description.

 

My polk db571s will be here tomorrow! What do I need to know about removing the door panel? I searched around but didn't find anything very good

 

What Focal were you considering? If it was 165cvx they are NOT loud. They are my rear fill speakers and my K2 components are easily twice as loud while having lower sensitivity.

 

Door panels are easy to pop off 2 screws and yank. As for speakers I am very very impressed with my dls comps I just put in defiantly was not expecting this kind of mid bass from a shallow mount speaker

 

Thanks. Will I need anything special to actually install the speakers? Just wire and baffles and screws right?

 

i just got a pair of boston speakers, a tad pricey but they sound great

 

You really should pop off the door panel and see what you've got in there. My '01 Double Cab had 6x9's in all 4 doors. And as far as the speakers I'd go with the Polk Audio's that XJBaylor posted in his comparisons link.

 

I haven't seen the inside of a 1st gen door, but you may also need a set of crimpers and spade terminals.

 

When I did mine the first time I had to cut the plastic on the back of the stock speaker rings to make my kenwoods fit because they were deeper than the stock unit so a dremel would help, if you're broke like me just use a multi purpose sawzall blade and some elbow grease. Did you order from crutchfield and get the adapter? If not then a good idea would be to tape the wires together and mark them(+&-) before you snip them so that you know which one's go where because when I did mine there are 2 wires that go to positive and 2 which go to negative and I didn't mark them and had to look around for a half hour trying to figure out which one's were which.

 

Crutchfield said 6x8s (5x7s) would fit. I guess I'm just gonna have to take it apart and figure it out

 

Most 6x9's will also work as 5x7's they usually have little tabs that will allow for a smaller/bigger mounting situation. Crutchfield usually get's it right but there are a few car's that I've helped with or have done that CF had the sizes wrong. Just pull the door off and take a look, you don't even need to take it all the way off you may just be able to pull up the bottom and look up there with a light.

 

Alright it is judgement day. One last quick question..The crutch field master sheet has instructions to strip the wires behind the speaker harness. Can I just cut off the old speaker harness instead? Seems like a pain to have to strip a section and not the ends.

 

If you don't ever plan to put the factory speakers back in then just cut them and strip the ends. The only reason for the way they suggest is to keep the stock connectors.

But as far as which speaker, my advice is to find them in a store if you can to listen to each in person. See which sounds best to you. All 3 brands you have picked make great products. Just a matter of which fits your taste and plans.
