smoked my tails

I recently smoked my tail lights and thought I would share a couple photos.



with the running lights on


Parts Required - 10mm socket and ratchet, Windex, rubbing alcohol, paper towl, and lint free cloth

1) ok first thing to do is aquire the "Pactra Racing Finish Window Tint" you can purchase at most major hobby shops around the valley or anywhere they sell hobby paint for plastics. it comes in small can's so it wouldn't hurt to grab two just in case.

2) second you will need to remove both lights from your vehicle using a 10mm socket remove the two bolts (one top one bottom) once the bolts are removed apply even presure towards the rear of the vehicle until the clips release then remove the wireing harness

3) Once you have the tail lights off the vehicle you must now clean any dirt or grime build up off of the lights with windex. then using rubbing alcohol and a clean lint free cloth you must rub the whole light down to be sure there is no left over chemicals that could effect your tint

4) find a nice open, well ventelated, and most important out of direct sunlight area you can spray the lights. find a large piece of card board or two and place the lights side by side leaving enough room inbetween so over spray will not happen.

5) the first coat you apply needs to be verry lite just make sure you have sprayed a little on every part of the lens this will help the next few coats stick better. once you begin putting your next coat on remember less is more, this paint runs verry easily when you spray to thick. waiting about a minute between coats (or until the paint isn't as shiny or appears dull) apply your next coat. Repeat until desired darkness is achieved

6) Now let the tail lights dry for at least 2 hours. Then just follow Number two in reverse

7) Remember when you are painting the tail lights that your vehicle still has to drive down the road and is subject to aproval from a police officer if you are to be pulled over or he has reson to believe your vehicle is not safe he can red tag your vehicle until you fix the problem so use your better judgement when you are painting.

Thanks for all the comments! They actually are just showing up dark in the pictures, they are lighter in person. I used 3 coats of Pactra Racing Finish Window Tint, and then I did 2 clear coats with Model Master Ultra Gloss Clearcoat. It was really easy to do, just time consuming.

 

did you take em off or just tape it off?

Thanks for all the comments!! All I know is that the light from the tail light has to be visible from 300 feet away, at least in Arizona, and when confronted about it the cop actually approved my lights. I guess it just depends on how "smoked" they really are.

 

It depends on the state. In California, no level of tint on the lights is legal.

 

Why were you confronted? Did he pull you over to ask about it?

That is much further than I would want to push. They may approve my lights but may not approve of the 3 beers I had.

I don't do it often but still do it.


That said, if I tinted mine, it would be far less than yours. Looks good against your white, though.

 

Haha oh no, I was at a public park 20 minutes after the park closed and he was just trying to hassle me since I'm a teenager. I spent over an hour at the park being lectured on how lucky I am that he was in a good mood and wouldn't ticket me. He pointed out the lights then I showed him and told him what I knew about the tail light visibility law and AZ and he just nodded and approved my lights after I turned them on.
