crankshaft bolt

is it possible to use a impact wrench on this bolt. my air compressor goes to 180 psi. or will i have to make the special tool. getting ready to do timing belt. i just ordered the snap on tensioner tool, so that should make things alittle easier. in the past, i tried to replace the thermostat and two of the blot head were alittle stripped. i'm thinking a 12pt socket and some heat? anyone else have a better idea. this is on a 3.4 02/prerunner. thanks for any tips!

 

You can use an impact on the crank bolt but you will still probably need the special tool to keep the crank from turning. There is a sticky in this section that shows how to make the tool.

 

to get an impact in there u gotta pull the radiator.. when i do them i dont pull the radiator, i use a huge ratchet and chain wrench

 

u can use the impact but you have to pull out radiator i just did my t-belt last night and did that because i didn't have the special tool and it came clean off with the impact gun

Same here, chain wrench and a large breaker bar. Then I just use a small triangle file to clean up any burrs left by the chain wrench.

 

6 point socket not 12.

 

Breaker bar and socket......brace against frame....bump starter over. Works every time.

This is THE single best way to do it, & its not a whackjob shortcut, it is used by mechanics all over.. Didn't we cover this last year Will ? (although it started a bit of a shit storm)

 

then there's the whole tightening the bolt back down after changing the belt...

 

no worries there steve, i've always been able to run it back down & torque to specs, gotta remember that those crank bolts have heated up & cooled off a 1000 times (expansion/contraction) plus time itself really gets a grip on threads, after its loosened you wont have the same issue, it'll torque as per usual ..I haven't had to use any thing to hold pulley while
re torquing...

 

You know what that makes sense.

I just got an idea, why cant you just put the truck in gear and have the parking brake on while busting that bolt loose? Of course this would only work with a manual but still, seems like it would work.

 

I tried this on my '83 solid axle, thought it might do it but still wound up using the "starter" method, it might work on some tho'
