Toying with the idea of getting a Ford ranger

Rangers are sloppy. Tacomas feel way tighter to drive.

 

Hmm, they look amazingly close. And I miss my Ranger too. Sorta.

I've driven all 3.. Tacoma and Frontier and definitely waaay above the Ford, although I have never seen a nice Ranger in my life. They all seem to be totally ragged out after 4-5 years. I owned a Frontier and feels a lot smaller when driving than the Taco. Can't really go wrong with any of them if you're buyng new. I would just Never buy a Ranger used. Never. Frontier's a great truck. Sold my 07 Crew Cab Nismo when I was commuting and needed better MPG. Regretted selling that thing every day.

Consumer Reports has consistently rated the Ranger in a class by itself...at the bottom of the compact pickup list. Primitive technology, crappy build quality, bad fuel mileage, cramped cab, road noise, mediocre safety performance. Save yourself while you still can!

 

Given the track record of Consumer Reports that might mean the Ranger is the best of the bunch. What a rag.

 

I had two rangers, both bought brand new, exact same truck both times, even the same color, 88, 98, blue extra cab XLT.

I loved the 88, I beat the shit out of that thing and it just took the hits. 60,000 miles in 3 years.

I hated the 98, it was a complete piece, all the lights would shut off on their own from time to time, usually while I was on the freeway late at night. I would pull off and wait 10 minutes, start and it would be fine. I also had a clunk, when I would start and stop that came from the bed. Took 5 visits and 2 dealers to fix it, I wasn't left feeling impressed. I traded the 98 in at about 26K on the odo... it just felt cheap in every way, much more than I the first one I owned.

I think the ranger was awesome to own when I was 18 years old. The extra cab was cool because the front seat went all the way down and it was a decent looking truck, got decent mileage and helped me make some extra cash when I needed to.

 

A buddy of mine had a 90's ranger and it ad almost 300,000 kms on it. He always did all the work, hardly any problems. He sold it to a buddy who didn't take care of it. His buddy had it a little over a year and got rid of it. My friend now has an 08 Ranger(bought new) with fx4 package. Hes never had any issues with it. Its always treated him good.
I was considering getting a Ranger when I was looking for a truck. I know that the gas was okay, you could modify greatly. I wasn't concered about the truck not lasting if I bought it from new. The complaints that I had I found the dash etc to be plain. I didnt care for the bucket seats. I just found the little extras(like space) I got with the Tacoma made me wanna buy it. If I ever had no choice but to buy a Ford, I would buy a Ranger. I wouldn't knock a Ranger. But a Mustang, yes lol

 

So, have you considered the canyon/ Colorado from gm? I rented one a couple years ago and it was the z-71 double cab. It wasn't bad.

90s interior? Thats funny since the Ranger has been basically the same since 1993.
I had a '93 Ranger and its frame rotted all to hell, difference was Ford didnt care enough to fix it.
Mine was a 4L 5-speed and it had no balls at all. All the rangers also have problems with the clutch slave cylinder, which is cheap, but inside the transmission so expensive to replace.

I thought Ford was canning the Ranger?

 

I owned a 2007 ranger, had zero problems and Ford treated me good. My son owns a 2008 ranger and has had zero problems as well. The gas mileage is terrible and they eat brakes but its a good reliable truck for a good price.

If ranger ever comes out with a 4 door crew cab model here in north america, like they do overseas, then I'm sure it'll be a hot seller.

That being said, I think the Tacoma is a far superior truck, better quality all around, IMHO.
