HID's....could a relay go bad?

Struggling to identify the problem here...

New ballasts, tight grounds, tight connections....but no lights. When I flick the lights on, I can hear a "click" coming from the relay harness but nothing else. No buzz from the ballasts.

I visually inspected the in-line fuse and it looks fine. I did not check the stock HL fuse though - not really sure how to. I did pull it and put it back in.

Only other thing I can think is a bad relay. Do these even go bad? I do think I had some water damage. The previous ballasts had signs of water in the connections. Could these blow the relay?

Where do I get a new relay?

Is this the thing you're referring to? It's the part that plugs into the stock headlight plug.

Very possible that it's the harness....just get anew one. TRS sales this "Old" style for $12.50 plus shipping.

 

I worked on an 05 Taco that HID's wouldn't work. I got a harness from DDM tuning and it fixed the issue.

 

Bought two relays at Off road warehouse...one set of my offroad lights would always shut off when the truck was moving..figured out it was a bad relay when I grabbed it and flicked it and the lights went out. I bought a new one and the problem went away. It is very possible its a relay and they are relatively cheap to replace.

 

Well...I guess I'm glad to hear others have had this problem and that a new harness fixed the problem. I just got off the phone with TRS. They tried to sell me a "new generation" one for $35 but - per the advice of Muy Grande - I inquired and they sold me an "old generation" one for $10. I asked but am not sure there is even a difference. Best part is they can 2-day ship it to me.

Next up is to replace the bulbs. At that point, I will have put together an entirely new kit

 

UPDATE...

It was definitely a bad relay. I ordered a new one from The Retrofit Source for $10 (the old style). Installed last night and lights work great. I assume water got into the connections and fried my last relay. During this install, I water sealed everything with lots of electrical tape. I also added foam behind the ballasts before screwing them down to the sidewall. I secured all excess wires with zip ties and cleaned it all up.

All is well again and hopefully remains that way for a long time!

 

Relays are like anything else--you get what you pay for. Omron, Panasonic, Bosch and TE (Tyco) are good relays. For me, the jury is out on Song Chuan but they seem to work good. "Pilot" and the cheap stuff you see in auto parts stores (and cheap HID kits) are not good relays.
