I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
this is a tough one. If it's a turbo diesel and regeared, i'd have to give it to him. It really all depends on how the vehicles are set up. Length and width don't mean near as much as power and tire surface area when it comes to mud.

I think it's ridiculous to automatically assume the toyota will win based upon nothing but brand loyalty.

It's the same with the "I pulled out a stuck Chevy" threads.

I used to have a 2500 chevy, duramax diesel, quad cab, 4x4, six inch procomp lift and 35 BFG mud terrains. It wasn't that great off road, simply to much weight. If it had traction and needed to pull something out, it would have pulled a tacoma into pieces! That being said, depending on the mud type, I think the tacoma will do better. It's kind of like comparing a 4x4 quad to a tacoma.

I don't think it is always brand loyalty though it might be in some votes. I like the Tacoma because it is much lighter. Though I think it will be close either way mainly because of the power advantage and the tires on the F-250. I'm not sure a 79 is even going to have a power to weight ratio advantage.

I used to wheel with a guy that had a jacked up old Chevy.....it was the same deal...always breaking shit and he was afraid to take that hunk-o-junk through holes that I was taking my stock Taco through. Mud makes thinks unpredictable. It could go either way.

See, your argument is believable. Somebody simply stating that the ford will break so the Tacoma will win is fundamentally flawed logic (hence the the brand loyalty debate.)

im not saying it WILL break but the ford is 30 years old and the taco is 11
and the ford is beat on and trashed on just about every day and it will obously have a lot of miles on it so and the taco isnt beat on (much i am 16) but it seams to me that the ford will most likely have somthing break

if its deep mud i would say the ford as long as it can turn the tires somewhat. the tacoma will simply get hung up due to lak of clearance. if its some sort of muddy field or something maybe the tacoma

Are you talking about racing through the mud or who can go through nastier shit?

The only way you have a chance is if he sinks and bottoms out.
Do you realize how big a a 37" tire is?
My f-150 on 35's would go places in 2wd my buddies stock Tacoma couldn't at all.

This question depends on the type of mud and what you plan to do, but if you're talking about the kind of mudding I do, I'd bet $100 on him.

My money would be on the F-250 too. Nothing against the taco, but contact patch and raw power for a mudhole is IMHO what gets you out.

I think the ford will win. It's been my experience that the more HP, and bigger the tire, the better in the mud. I have a 95 dodge ram 2500 4x4 with a 360 V8, with 35's on it - it'll pull around my taco all day long in the mud..even when the dodge bog's down, the motor still has the power to chew threw the ground and pull forward...

Effectivly driving in mud usually requires enough ground clearance that the tires can reach the solid bottom. It's not about the lighter vehicle "floating" on top. This is why all the crazy redneck mud trucks are on super tall but skinny tires. I am a loyal Toyota guy who has wheeled an IFS truck on 31s and 33s in the mud a lot. I am sorry but there is just no way that 31s will compete w/ 37s in the mud. Your poor little taco will sink until it is high centers on the skidplate/IFS and then it will stop. It won't have anything to do with power or weight just simple traction.

If you do race make sure that the Toyota goes through first cause the ford is going to make soup of the hole. If it were my ford I would go through in 2wd just to make it harder fo you. If the ford does get stuck tell him he is SOL because bouncing a heavy full size with a mini is a good way to screw up your frame and brake stuff. Tell him he needs a winch and a Pull-Pal.

i've seen different vehicles out do each other in many differnet places but when it comes to mudding( going through deep shit/ ruts/) usually the bigger the better just because of power and clearance. Now if each of you are going to a new place with no previous ruts or bottomless holes i think the taco will do better. It all depends on the terrain.
i had a guy with a full size chevy bet me one night that i couldn't follow him through the power line trails due to the muddy hills so naturally we went out to try it. Well it didn't take me long to figure out that he was right i couldn't follow him because he kept getting stuck on every hill where the taco just walked right up. So you never do know until you learn.
