Header questions...

I posted this in the regular 2nd gen post, maybe I will get more responses here. Anyone in here have a header on their 2.7 four cylinder? I have the access cab 4x4 with the 2.7 manual. I have put in the AFE pro dry and removed secondary air filter. If I do a header, what are your opinions, noticeable increase in power? What is a good product to get? Should I get ceramic coated ones or not? I only have 5000 miles on my truck, would headers void the warranty? I hope someone has some good input.

 

Doug Thorley makes some Headers for the 4cyl. ive seen some on ebay quite a few times.

 

If you wait a couple of weeks...LCE has a header that makes more power than Doug Thorley.

It will not void your warranty.

 

I am sorry but was is LCE? Also ceramic or not? what is the way to go? How much hp and torque will I gain on average?

 

LCE is another company who is currently making some new stuff for our 2.7. (Turbo, header, exhaust, short shifter)

The doug thorley header should yield a 14 hp and 11 tq gain.

The chrome ones will start to turn purple, so if you dont want that, then go with the ceramic.

i just got the LC headers for my 2.7 and it was a straight bolt in, i didn't have to mess with it or anything. you're going to pay a bit, they're expensive, but let me tell you. i LOVE it. i also have a 2.5 inch custom catback with a flowmaster super 44 on it. greatest investment ever.

 

Great thanks for the info. I don't think LC has any for the 08 tacoma yet. How much where yours? Also I am thinking of not getting the ceramic coated, i don't care what they look like. The DT ones are aluminized, are the LC ones stainless?

 

chris4X4 has suggested the Tri-Y header, which i think ill be going with!

Seems like the bigger benefit would be the extra 20 ft-lbs at lower RPM...

Anyone have these and like them? Any indepentent tests to prove their worth? $500 is a lot for only a few ponies...

thats a huge gain for a 4cyl.

 

i noticed the gain in 5th as well, though the increase was all over the RPM range. my truck lost a lot of wind past 3500 before the header. now theres the same power all the way through. it was a major difference in the way the engine acted. the LC's were very expensive, i paid around 450-500 for them. i don't remember if i got the ceramic coated one or the stainless. i think they're the ceramic because they had a nice smooth coating on them. i haven't heard much about the Tri-Y's. the doug thorleys are decent as well. just stay away from Hookers. they're bad for you. haha sorry. they're cheap IMHO. read around here, theres a lot of threads on headers and exhausts.

 

bunch of great info guys. since i have a 2008 I think the DT are the only option I have. I just want to make sure they don't affect the factory warranty? Anyone know for sure on this issue?

 

It wont void your warranty unless something goes horribly wrong and you cause a problem. The dealership would also have to prove that the header caused the problem.

 

Other than ceramic headers running a little cooler is there a reason to choose them over the chrome header that turns purple(if that doesn't bother you)? I have an 08 Access Cab 4 cyl. Thanks for any info.

I think the ceramic coating helps prevent rust.

Just bought a used set of DT's from a guy that lived in Michigan. He had them on his truck for 6 months, including last winter. The salt (or whatever) used on their roads had rusted the mounting flanges, but the pipes are ok. So, it looks like the ceramic coating is only on the pipes.
