EMP proofing your Tacoma

I have a few thoughts.

If it's a high altitude nuclear based EMP, then all bets are off. We've got some projections on what the implications might be, but it's never really been done so, who knows. Some projections have such a device putting out about a peak of 6MW per square yard at 50,000 volts over a few microseconds. Sort of like a static shock from rubbing your feet on the carpet. In the worst case, it could be a nationwide event, depending on a number of factors.

So, it could fry your electronics - but shielding from it would require a reasonably sturdy faraday cage with an excellent ground. Lead would work, but it's heavy as hell - not that it matters, as a good solid ground sort of precludes it being mobile anyway. Copper or steel would be a better choice. And you'd have to shield the whole truck - it's no good to have a friend O2 sensor or something render your truck un-drivable.

But that's a nuclear device - which Iran likely hasn't got. And a delivery mechanism, which they definitely haven't got.

So, what about nonnuclear EMPs ? Well, they aren't anywhere near as effective - they generate much smaller pulses and without the benefit of the magnetosphere, so the affected area is much smaller and so is the delivered power.

EM phenomena diminish as the cube of the distance (non directional signal strength is a function of volume, after all) so the farther you are from it, the better off you are. I doubt you'd even notice it a few miles away even if they got it 5-10 miles up. And if it's ground based, you could measure it in blocks.

Anyway, the same shielding problems apply.

Granted, this is speculation - but I highly doubt Iran would use an EMP on us. Just not enough bang for the buck. If they could deliver a device that can generate any meaningful EMP, they'd be better off actually blowing something up with it.

 

Grounding out your entire truck is probably a bad idea. The ground could actually act as an antenna during this pulse and induce a current that would fry various electronic components. Your best bet would be to construct a faraday cage of some sort. They came in all different shapes and sizes and different materials. It just needs to obviously be a conducting material IE aluminum. Think about a microwave and what its job is. It acts like a faraday cage, keeping harmful waves from mostly escaping. Ever wondered what that mesh screen is on the door of the microwave? That screen is absorbing most of the waves from inside the microwave.

Your house is not an adequate cage and does not have good attenuating capabilities. An ammo can could act as a good cage as well, but that will mostly depend on the seal around the lid (like a gay transformer, you want metal on metal contact). A cheap way to test attenuating capabilities is to put a radio inside the can with it turned on and close the lid. Can you hear anything? You could also use a cell phone to test its ability to attenuate. Put the cell phone in the can and close the lid. Does the phone now go straight to voicemail? The cell phone test wont work if you have AT&T as they are already unreliable and you wont know if the can is really attenuating or not... LOLZ

 

If you did, you would be the only person on the road with a working vehicle and you'd look like a jerk off like Tom Cruise did on War of the Worlds.

 

only way to do it would be to build a faraday cage and park the truck in it and then never drive it because what happens if your at work and an EMP goes off? well that F cage that you built at your house wont do shit...


So basically there is nothing you can do to "EMP proof" your tacoma...or any new car.

If you are truly worried about it then you need to go buy something like a '82 or older vehicle.

why would worry about Iran using an EMP on us when APPARENTLY they have nukes.
Even if they were dumb enough to use a nuke anywhere in the world, hell would ran down on them from every corner of the globe, including those 45 bases surrounding them.
Its called Mutual Assured Destruction, a form of Nash equilibrium.
So, an EMP would be the least of our worries like everyone has already said.

It is way better to invest in guns and lots and lots of ammo. See the thing is when you have a neighbour up the street that has wasted his time and money to emp proof his shit all you have to do is go over there with a .223 rifle with the 100 round drums on it and say gimme your shit or die. Its just that simple. Now with your new ride you can go around the town and rape and pillage everyone.

This is a little of a stretch OP.... I don't think you should worry about EMP's. Have you been playing Call of Duty a lot lately. If you want to be serious... You should have made a thread about zombie proofing your truck. Havent you seen the Walking Dead? You wake up in the hospital one day and the whole world is under zombie attacks
