Cb antenna in stock am/fm location???

Anyone have this setup for their truck? I thought it would be the best place to put a firestik cb antenna (good ground, would look stock, etc) and use the firestik splitter to use the cb antenna for the radio as well.

If anyone has done it, could you post a how to?

 

Why not just get a hood mount for the Firestik? Then you could remove your stock antenna and still use The Firestik for AM/FM. Sorry I'm not much help but I'm just not sure how you would mount a CB antenna in the stock location. It's a small plastic mount that wouldn't be near big enough or strong enough to mount a Firestik.

Thanks! I saw this post and emailed the OP to find out more on the install because I can't figure out how he did it by that posting. He hasn't responded. Must not get on much. Have you tried it? Anyone have experience with the install and subsequent performance?

 

I don't like the look of hood mounts. If I could find a really good looking, stealth one, then I'd consider it. I HATE antennaz on my truck that don't look like factory installed.

 

I will be installing my 2' Firestik in the stock mounting location and using it as an AM/FM/CB antenna. i have a few different ideas, and if it all works out, ill post a write up on it. Anyone done this yet??

That little 5mm antenna bolt is not going to hold a Firestick for long.

 

well im planning to get rid of all the stock antenna shit all together. im thinking i can get 2 firestik stud mounts (2nd one really just for the coupler) mount the stud mount below the antenna base in the fender (with a 10mm washer to keep it from going thru the antenna base), get a 3/8" threaded rod, cut like an inch or two off depending on how deep the antenna base is, put 2 10mm washers on top of the antenna base, with the 2nd coupler on top of them, keeping the 2nd couple above the antenna base, then just screw in the 2' firestik like you normally would to a stud mount, into that second, extended coupler. i have the firestik matchmaker splitter, and can then just plug the cables in and done. i think i can make it work. could you follow that? i may be wrong..

similar to these parts.. you kind of have to visualize our trucks antenna base insted of the one pictured but you get the idea..



from left to right...

- stud mount screws into coupler #1
- 10mm washer goes on top of coupler #1
- 3/8" rod goes into coupler #1, over 10mm washer
- antenna base goes over 3/8" rod, sits on top of 10mm washer
- +2 10mm washers go on 3/8" rod and sit on top of antenna base
- 2nd coupler threads on 3/8" rod above 2 10mm washers, on top of antenna base
- 2' (or however big you want) firestik goes into 2nd coupler like one big happy family...

Looks like it should work as long as you can keep the center conductor isolated.
I'd be a little concerned about the thin sheetmetal, but that can be doubled up on the inside.

 

yea, the plan would be for the antenna base to isolate the center 3/8" rod. only cut it to size just what you need... if any extra i guess i could just use washers to fill in the gap.

i grounded my CB radio inside the cab to a metal bolt under the lower dash on the drivers side, but am getting some noise feedback when squelch is off from braking, using directionals, using the window washer fluid, etc. so i'm going to move that ground directly to the battery, and that SHOULD get rid of 99% of the feedback, i dont want to spend 30 bucks on a noise filter if i dont have to.

 

No need to spend $30 on a filter (for power)

Just get a 4700mfd 60v electrolytic and connect it across the hot and ground at the back of the radio. That'll filter out anything on the incoming power line (won't impact what the antenna is picking up).
About $5... another $5 if you want to put it in a box with hookup wire and proper strain reliefs.

But see what it does with the improved grounding first.

A CB antenna's gotta pretty much suck as an AM and FM antenna right?

AM: roughly 560 to 1600 khz

CB: roughly 27 Mhz

FM: roughly 89 to 106 Mhz

 

would be curious to see... if i go thru all that work im not taking it back off, good thing i have a 6-disc changer

Having asked the question, I had to go look it up.

According to Firestick, since the AM and FM bands are receive only, there's not a big requirement for the antenna length to be resonant on that frequency. So it's not that much of a hit if you multipurpose a CB antenna as an AM/FM receive-only antenna.

The flip side - trying to transmit on CB frequencies using the AM/FM antenna is what really hurts.
