ABS disable mod for 05+ Tacomas w/o VSC & locking diff write up *pics*

Booya! My first post! Let me start off by saying hi….Hi.

I have an 07 Sport DCLB and wanted to figure out how to shut off the ABS, but also wanted to be able to turn it back on without having to cycle the truck off and back on. Here is what I figured out:

Even though the Sports do not have the e-locker like the OR’s there is still a signal going to the ABS ECU telling the computer that the diff is locked or not locked. Think of it this way; instead of Toyota re-engineering the system for Sport trucks, they kept it the same and that signal never gets changed…’cause we don’t have a locker…follow me?

But if we play all sneaky like and interrupt that signal, the ABS ECU thinks we do have a locking diff, and that we just locked it…therefore it disables ABS.

I generally followed the method in this thread and preformed what ruggedT is describing in post #52. (Thank you to ruggedT for the additional info to clarify).

Okay, so the Blue wire with the Yellow stripe is the sucker we want (in all of the wiring diagrams I have found, I think this is coded as the “L-Y” wire; I guess for Light-blue and Yellow?). It is in the same location as Rodstone shows in his original posts (and you can actually see it in his pics). On my truck, looking at the plug going into the ABS ECU if you start at the top closest to the fire wall it is the 8th wire down. You could trace this back to the harness coming out of the firewall and find it there, or try and find it under the kick-panel before it exits the cab. I tried, but it is pretty tight in there, and I’m not sure if there are other Blue and Yellow wires for other things not related to this…so I went right to the source, where I knew I couldn’t mess it up.

This wire is constantly sending 12v to the ECU which is interpreted as the diff NOT being locked and therefore the ABS stays on. If you install a single pole single throw switch to this wire and cut off the 12v that is going through it, the ECU reads this as the diff IS locked and turns off the ABS.

The nice thing about this method is that it allows you to turn the ABS off and back on without having to turn the truck off for the ABS computer to reset (this is what is necessary when you use a method that disconnects any of the wheel speed sensors or the brake light circuit). For everyone who is concerned about driving on roads that are variable (snow-packed to dry and back and forth) it is great to be able to switch it on the fly.

I do not have any other systems in my truck so I will not be able to speak to how this method effects them (VSC, TRAC, etc…). And theoretically, even if you have an OR, this method may still work, although, again I cannot confirm.

If I understand correctly. The "L-Y" wire is the transfer indicator switch for the rear diff. If so, the wire is easily accessed under the dash in connector IB1. See this thread for precise location information.



According to your experience, the non-locker truck guys just have to interrupt the wire, while the locker guys ground it out to fool the computer. Extremely elegant and simple solution.

 

I "rodstoned" my truck this afternoon. It's a 2007 access cab SR5. No VSC or locker. The blue/yellow wire was in the same position on the ABS plug as described above. On the IK1 plug, there was a solid green wire on pin 4. I did see another blue/yellow wire on another connector, but I haven't looked that up. I just did the blue wire snip on mine as Rodstone described.

 

I have been waiting for an "on the fly" solution for my non-locked sr5. With the extra insight i shall do this.

 

Mine is a 2008 access cab SR5 2.7 Manual. No locker and No VSC as far as I know. So we have the same truck - right ? Did this Rodstone thing disable the ABS ? R U going to run it thru a switch ?

Yep, although I didn't see the blue/yellow wire where you describe/show on that IB1 plug. I believe that picture is taken from a truck with a locker.....

My IB1 plug also only has the light green wire as well. Like I said, if you can find the blue/yellow then it would probably be easier to take care of this all at the kick panel, but I wasn't sure. When I looked at the whole cluster coming out of the fire wall into the engine bay I saw two blue/yellow wires (different gauges) so at that point I just decided to get it where it was clear that I had the correct one. Thanks.

 

I can't say for sure that the 2.7 is the same as the 4.0 that I have If you have the same wires in the same positions, they should be the same. There are two procedures discussed here. The OP, Rodstone, has one and the second procedure by Gimmeanm3 is a different one. If you want a switch, then the second one is better because it allows switching on the fly. Rodstone's procedure requires shutting the engine off to cycle the switch. If you just want it disabled period, then cutting either wire does that. That's the difference.

So I just did the mod to my truck and I went with using the Blue/ Yellow wire. The ABS turns on and off with the flip of a switch which is also indicated via my ABS light. I ended up feeding the wires through the firewall with 20g wire to just behind the drivers front wheel. Here is a pic. To make it easy for anyone else wanting to do this. It is the smaller of the two blue/yellow wires.
btw. I have a 2005 DCSB SR5 6 speed no lockers.

Just had a thought about this while at work , if the wiring terminates in the dash where the diff lock switch would be in an offroad , is tricking the computer actually as easy as installing an OEM Diff Lock switch and wiring it up ?

 

Well....I have been very nicely arguing with my parts guy about this. He is truly a toyota master and I have only proven him wrong ONCE! When I told him what I was trying to do....he automatically started to order me the switch but I tried to argue with him that he doesn't understand what I was trying to do! Well...I am starting to believe he does and ordered the switch any way because this switch along with the fog switch are the only one's that actually function like a true toggle that I planned on using for this mod anyway!

Yep. I had to go this route because I didn't have a Blue/Yellow on the pug inside the cab. I basically went to the ABS main plug and found it "8th from top" then followed it to where I could strip the electrical tape back. There should be two blue and yellows. a 20g and about an 18g

 

When I am back in town I'll search the wire diagrams to see if that wire can be found in the cab some where. I'm glad there is a simple solution for the non locker crowd.
