The difference in weight between stock and this when full is about 85# for gas and maybe 40-50 for the tank itself. Presumably you wouldn't be filling it most of the time unless you were heading out for a long trip. In that case you could plan your added load to put heavier items on the right side. It gives you the OPTION of carrying more fuel, not the mandate. I would not want a tank where my spare goes because...., that's where my spare goes.:D

I'd rather put a slip tank in the back of my truck. At least then if need be I can refuel other vehicles as well if need be.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
My 78 Bronco has a 32 gallon tank, it was a factory option back then, I can tell ya one thing though, I have maybe filled it all the way four times since I have had it! Last summer I topped it off for a long wheeling/camping trip and it cost like $120 dollars.

I'm very interested in this project as well. OP, I realize there are privacy concerns, but how can we let this gentlemen know if we're interested?

Dont know the position of the spare off the top of my head, but if that position is behind the rear axle and you put a fuel tank there, enjoy burning to death when you get rear ended

How is it any different if you got t-boned? Inside the frame is inside the frame. Lots of trucks have tanks behind the rear axle. Lots of trunks have tanks by the frame. I'd like to see data supporting crash worthiness either way.

The Magnesium and water option was too expensive.

Interesting project. I would not do this to my truck. Instead I would go for a second 20 gallon tank that refuels the primary stock tank using it's own pump. After reading about the problems with the Ford Panther platform I'd put it somewhere... but not where the spare tire is now. That way the truck can be easily returned to factory configuration. Also, the fuel system has an emissions leak test circuit. That adds an additional layer of complexity to the whole project of replacing the stock tank.

This guy is building the tank fully compatable with the factory leak check system. He's really doing it right it seems to me. He's designing it to use all the factory connections and appliances. It's not really something I need, but I think he is doing it well.

Looks like it has many seams to crack, burst and leak.... not to mention the PITA it is to fill all the pin-holes while its being pressure tested..

Depends on the method you are using to weld. Mig will require atleast 1 inch overlap on every start and stop. I've done a lot of welding involving pressure testing. The less start and stops or weld the better it will turn out
