Anyone a NRA instructor?

Im looking at becoming a NRA certified basic handgun instructor and teaching CHL/CCW classes.

Does anyone else do this or know anything about it?

 

I am a certified Rifle/Shotgun instructor. I got mine again because the local Boy Scouts needed someone to run the range. (No pistols allowed on the local BSA ranges so I haven't earned those instructor ratings yet)


Other can give you an idea on teaching CHL/CCW but I would say the certification is pretty straightforward. Just a fee, then a class of the proper length of time, and then passing the test. There is a test at the end of it that is quite picky on details but you don't have to have a 100%.

All in all I would say it is a very small subset of what you need to know to actaully teach with authority.

One tip... get the NRA Instructors Insurance. For the fee it gives you some peace of mind for teaching.

 

I'm an NRA Instructor for their Basic Pistol course. I'm also registered to teach CCW in my county. I've taken maybe 100 folks through the NRA Basic Pistol course, but I've only done a few CCW classes.

To become an instructor, just get in touch with the NRA and final a local instructor qualified to offer the instructor's course. Then you just need to take the Basic Pistol course and the Instructor's course from him. I had to reister with my Sheriff to get on the list of approved CCW instructors, and this may or may not be the case where you live.

 

Certified Rifle, Reloading, and Certified RSO.

IMO, if the Handgun Instructor course is anything like the Rifle Instructor course, it's going to teach you the bare minimum on how to convey safety and fundamentals to a student.

My rifle expertise was acquired before Certified Rifle Instructor status via competitive High Power Rifle (Distinguished Rifleman #1924, Civilian).

Are you getting the NRA Pistol Instructor certification because it's a requirement to teach CHL/CCW in your locale?

 

From what Ive read I would have to be a certified NRA basic pistol instructor to be able to teach the CHL class.

 

The NRA Instructors group is a very good source of information. At the corporate location their #1 goal is to get more people taught and the instructors and legal requirements are a big part of that. They helped me when I was trying to navigate the California/Boy Scout requirements.

How much informal experience do you have?

One thing that you can do is find some established instructors that are looking for help running a class. Being an assistant instructor is a great way to get started, especially if you're pretty new to teaching. You'll run across all kinds of people, field all kinds of questions, and get valuable experience, all under the wing of an experienced instructor.

I dont really know who would want to teach me how to teach a class b/c that would mean I would be competition for them.

I took the florida CCW class last saturday, it's only a 3 hour class, and was very straight forward. No test, so shooting involved. The intructor presented everything from a powerpoint and talked about various things.

I already have my Texas CHL but I just wanted to take this one so it would overlap my tx one and its good for 7 years compared to 4 with TX. Every question that was asked in the class I could have ansewerd as good as or better than the instructor.
