Anyone running after market wheels ( rims) and noticed a decrease in gas mileage from the weight? My truck has those ugly base stock steel wheels. they look hideous!

Just bought my 4 door 4 litre. I traded in my Jeep JK Rubicon. I wont be doing any mods. I learned my lesson on the Jeep. In the end, mods just cost money. The rims are the steelies. I may be going aftermarket aluminum.

Has anyone looked into changing the rear end gearing? I just bought an '09 2wd and use the truck more as a daily driver with some occasional, maybe 3 times/year, towing (4000lb trailer/load.) I don't know what the rear end gears are stock in the TRD package but for street use, would it be beneficial to change them to get better fuel mileage?

    Thanks,

    Ray

    You have 3.73.

Probably not cost effective if you pay someone to change the gears for you, and maybe not even if you do it yourself. I doubt you can get 2 mpg better with a gear change. Towing that load puts you down to 4th gear, a big gear change could possibly put you into 3rd.

Thanks for the information. I'm heading to Sacramento in the morning (about 1012 miles round trip.) I'll see what I get on the trip. With my other vehicles if I keep the rpm's at or below 2000, I get pretty good mileage. With my F-150 and the 5.4L V-8 I could get 24+. Any time it went above 2K mileage would drop to 13 or 14 mpg.

    Ray

PS: Fuel mileage on the way to Sac: rpm's abut 1900-1950, speed right around 65 (66 or so) Left San Diego with 40 miles of city driving on the odometer. Averaged 21.30 mpg. I'll update after my next fill-up. Tried 70 mph with the tach showing 2000 rpms and mpg dropped to just over 20.

filters are all about the same if you get a name brand filter, volant, k&n, AFE, TRD, etc. big difference is dont over oil them and clean them when they start to get dirty.

i actually use volants filter because it has a no oil type that is good for 4 years 100,000 mile warrenty. so if anything happens like when a rock tore into my air box i sent the filter in and i got a new one.

    sorry for the :threadjacked:

So I'm a bit confused. On the first page the second post says to put in a high flow AFE filter. Of course its been a few years since that post so maybe its been determined the filters don't do anything for MPG?

The AFE pro dry s drop for the 2nd gen dont really save fuel. Dont hurt either. They are popular because they only cost about the price of 2 oem's. Plus they make the intake sound louder, but that gets old after a while. On my '08 above 70 on the highway it makes more noise than a disposable paper filter.

Some times conventional wisdom is passed on that may have had merit at one time and in this case it did make sense with carburators but with closed loop fuel injection it is ancient history.

This explains it all. Your cars cpu adjusts your throttle plate compensating for any air filter restrictions to the point where even grossly clogged filters show zero reduction in mpg with potential increase since the motor won't use more fuel if it can't bring in more air. Definitely you can lose power without a clean air filter, but not much.

Synthetic oil/lubes used throughout. NGK Iridium Lazer 100K spark plugs. Rear differential breather extension modification. Toyota front skid plate, roof rack, bed mat, chrome exhaust exhaust. Runs like new!
I have been reading about these air filters and dicussed it with my mechanic of 40+ years and from everyones overall comments there is no increse in mpg. Not to metion this quote I read but this guy is driving a little 4 popper who states his vehicle is extrememly loud/annoying at 75 mph.

I don't know of the V6 would have the same problem but he states his vehicle is extrememly loud at 75mph. I continue to purchase my filters at NAPA discount for under $10. After doing the calculations these other filters are just a waste of money. They want close to $80 for an AFE Pro Dry for a V6 tacoma. Rip off. I would have to drive 100's of thousands of miles to get my moneys worth if I were to buy an AFE Pro Dry filter. I prefer to put my dealer comaparable NAPA filter in every 10-12K depending on how it looks. Best of luck.

All of these supposed mpg mods do not work in mine or my mechanics opinion and everything I read. Switchiting over to all synthetics, front, rear diff, transfer case, oil didn't help an once either but they are well worth it because you do less changing and your vehicle parts will last much longer; not to mention clean out your engine compared to the reprocessed oil the dealers use. I bring in my own 5w-30 Synthetic and my dealer gives me a new filter, new ring for the cap screw and changes the oil with my product for $12. Basically they are charging me $7 to do the work; not worth playing with the oil, getting rid of it or getting my hands dirty. Bring a book and drink their coffee. Hehe.

Interesting. I've never thought of bringing my own oil. But it makes sense. Probably save money that way and you know what you are getting. I also didn't know they used reprocessed oil. I just assumed they had a vat of Valvoline in the back.

Which is best? This will be debated forever

I like K&N , I have not bought an air filter 13 years

K&N filters are great, the only problem is when people over oil them, then they get on an internet forum and talk bad about a product that is only messed up due to their negligence
