Saying Seattle can't get an NHL team without a new arena , and saying if Seattle builds a new arena they are garaunteed an NHL team are two completely different things though

Agreed. However, reports seem to be pretty clear that the money guy, the mayor of Seattle and the NHL commish have all talked. It's public knowledge that Hanson, the investor, wasn't willing to build without a commitment that NBA/NHL would provide a team.

A deal was agreed to this week and will be announced today. I don't see an investor pledging 300mil and Seattle pledging 200mil to build an arena without something singed promising a team.

I don't think I'm retarded but I would argue the Quebec City, Seattle fan base issue. It's very clear the NHL is hesitant about Quebec City again because there is only ~500k people and no major city to pull from nearby without tapping into an already tapped NHL market. The NHL has very laid out marketing plans which is why they don't allow Vancouver much access into Seattle. Way more people in the greater Seattle are, and Oregon, with no access to an NHL team.

Calgary and Edmonton are bigger markets than Quebec City, and there's A LOT more money in Calgary and Edmonton than Quebec City. with that said I still think another Canadian team is a better option than relocating a team somewhere in the states. as stated in the link below, the only american team in the top six for revenue last season was the rangers.

Stats about how big the Greater Seattle area don't really translate to an actual fan base .

They will compete with the Seahawks , Mariners and Sounders

Mexico City has a big population too , but probably not a hockey hotbed

Agree....Look at Dallas, ATL, NJD, NYI, PHX, FLA teams. They all have massive populations yet they struggle financially. For a team to succeed they need a good product, corporate support, and rink location are all key. I can speak for Dal, PHX and ATL, it is not easy to access those rinks on a week night. For the NHL I think smaller markets with winter climates are better.

 

The Lightning have been getting very aggressive with marketing the team over here (hell they even raised ticket prices). They just dumped a shit ton of money into the arena, to make fans happier.

 

Looks like your local politicians have done a great job at getting the taxpayers to buy into the arena plan. It happens all over the country. You're not alone.
