I spent the first 13 years of my career in Field Artillery - worked 155mm and 8" SPs, commanded a Lance Missile Battery and was the BN FSO for 9th Infantry Regiment. A bad knee forced me to branch transfer to MI as a major - served as a Division G2 planner, MI BN XO, Division G2 and MI battalion commander - then spent 6 years in the Pentagon - with a 1 year break for National War College.

In the Pentagon, I was on the Army staff in G3 (Strategy, Plans and Policy) and I cna't tell you how many brieifings I put together and/or gave. The true Pentagon Warrior - Power Point Rangers Lead the Way!! :p

The best saying, I ever heard was from my old battalion S3 as we were coming back from an FTX...
"Specialist you better get my computer back and working right now, I'm a Staff Officer, my weapon is my f*cking mouse"

That statement is as true as it gets lol

Heh...my brother was MI for most of his career...even got featured in Wired magazine during GW2. He's the one who made the quote "If we run out of batteries, this war is screwed!"

Oh, I've been called much worse. :)

WHen I took over as the G2 for 3ID the division commander told me, at my in-brief, that he would be thrilled if I was right 40% of the time. He told me he recognized the difficulty in predicting and that he was as responsible for the intel outcomes as I was. His PIR, CCIR and intent drove the train.

Intel is only as good as the reporting sent in. It's not magic, it's not pretty and it's lots of SWAG. Maybe my combat arms background made me a little more attuned to the combat commanders' needs - but there were still plenty of times where I had to grab hold and make a call. Luckily, I beat the 40% target.
