    Yeah.
20 years ago after enjoying the RC10 buggy, I got one of the first RC10T's sold. It looked stupid then, looks stupid now, but it was still fun to race. There was no online shopping then, whippersnappers. You made do with what was sold at your local shop and you learned to like it. Brushless motors didn't exist for R/C, and if you couldn't solder and figure out what motor worked best for you and your track, you were a loser. If I recall, a 12 double in the 4WD buggy and a 15 triple in everything else was my favorite. Red Sanyo matched and pushed 6-cell Ni-Cads for stock, yellow 7-cell for mod if you had the coin. Those were the days.

But wait. What's this LiPo stuff that runs for 10+ minutes? Brushless? Must be some voodoo crap. Anyway, now I have THIS:

Brother, you gotta back up a little more if you want my beginnings, to 1984, the RC10 was just released, with the six gear tranny. There were NO ESCs, hell, there were no BECs (battery eliminating circuit) you HAD to carry four AA batteries on your model to power your servos, yes plural, one for steering, and one for throttle, there were only resistor "wipers" speed controls. The only modified motors my shop carried were Kyoshos', and the models were listed in runtime seconds, 240ST, 360ST, 540ST, 660s and the awesome 360 Gold (this fucker actually had two bearings) and the 360 series were a long can motor, like the 550s today. You had to gear to make time, which was four grueling minutes. Those yellow cells were SCR 1200 mah, the red SCE IIRC. Sanyo was the only maker of cells. What about paying the hostage price for a set of "matched" cells? I digress, these "whippersnapers" have no idea of what it "was" like. The main difference between us is, I've never gotten out, and have seen/bought everything in between then and now. And your new ride looks sweet BTW, best of luck to you.

To get to that kind of detail you can end up around 1k, check out rc4wd,com they have all the stuff needed to do it. You can go with an Axial Honcho that looks like a 1st gen taco for like 300 or less.

For what the price you can't beat the honcho, plus there is a HUGE after market for them. On the topic of toyota there is much out there, you are going to do a lot of fab work to get the detail like in the video. You could prob get it done for under 150 I believe. Maybe less.

Check out rc4wd. Also rccrawler.com, it is a forum with LOTS of info.

Thanks for the responses, I was into RC cars when I was younger, but lost interest over the years. I figure it would be fun to check them out and go wheeling in my backyard.

    Yeah.
My first aluminum tub RC10 had the dual-servo setup as well. Novak came out with an electric one soon after I started, and then Tekin one-upped them with one that was adjustable so you could nail the throttle and not completely spin out.

My local shop used to get individual cells that had been analyzed, they put a sticker on them with the specs. I used to build my own "matched" batteries from those and left the expensive "pushed" stuff to the rich kids that couldn't run a race without breaking down anyway. I had all kinds of combinations of pinions and spurs to get the right power and time out of the motor and battery. Ah, those were the days.

BTW, I just put that same Castle SCT Sidewinder setup in my SC10 4x4. It works really well but the ESC gets really hot, about to order a fan to put on it.

Mine came with a fan for both. Mine being 2wd I don't think it'll get as hot.

Yeah, my first speed control was a Futaba, not electronic, but electric, had a switching unit in it, only eight "steps" in the throttle curve. It was so big it would really fit under the buggy body, but it beat those wipers. Then Novak/Tekin changed everything. And don't forget "timed" chargers, how many packs did you smoke with one of those?
