I SHOULD be excited

but I can't help being disappointed.

I just received a call from SCAD, saying that I am accepted.

SCAD is Savannah College of Art and Design. I applied to the branch in Atlanta, GA. It is truthfully my dream school. Anything coming out of there is top notch, and I could probably get a job immediately when I graduate.

However, the tuition is around 25K. That's 25,000 dollars per year! Do you know what I could do with $25,000? I could make it rain in a strip club for at least 14.7 seconds.

So, I worked my ass off getting in as many scholarship applications as I could. I have a great portfolio, great recommendations, great statement of purpose, and they offer me $3000 per year. C'monnnnnnnnnnn


As I sit here and soak up my own depression, I can't help but think about how one of my friends applied there too. When she had applied, she only sent in the application. No scholarships, recommendations, or anything else.
(She doesn't really need the money though, because her father is letting her use his G.I. bill for school) BUT, the school offers her $8,000 per year? Does that really make any sense to anyone?

honestly i go to a california state polytechnic school for engineering and my yearly tuition is only about 4k tops. Are you sure its worth it? Did you apply for financial aid through FAFSA? if not, check it out! Its free money if your approved.

 

Or you can pay for it yourself like I did. Loans suck but it's a means to an end.

I go to Cal Poly too.
Tuition is just over $1200 this quarter. OF course you're from Florida so you'd pay out of state tuition. IF it's that great a program get the loans and work your ass off at graduating. Then you'll be paying off a house payment worth of debt for 30 years. Look into state school unless you can guarantee that a degree from there will be worth an extra 100k plus 30 years of interest. I doubt it.

MacTAco, my daughter was just accepted by NC States School of Design. She knows French, and may spend time in Provence! We dumped Washington Univ in St. Louis as too expensive.

Lemme' throw some perspective out there. I myself work as a creative director, and have had 6 other design jobs ranging from advertising, site design, banner ads, cartoon animation, print, and basically the whole nine yards. I went to a small art college in MA, but this was over 10 years ago and back then it cost around $8,000 a year. I had a partial scholarship and had completed two years of community college. Back then, you could do the whole transfer deal out of comm college and only pay for two more years in a "real" college and get a four year degree. Not sure if they allow that now.But basically, I didn't pay as much to go to school since I spent 50% of the time in comm college.

BUT... looking back, I seriously didn't use hardly anything that I learned in college. I was going to be a cartoon animator, but there is ZERO work in that field. That and all of the 3D shops ( Pixar, Dreamworks, Sony, and Lucas) are extremely competitive to get into because EVERYONE wants that sort of job.You almost have to know someone that works there. I wound up doing graphic design because I learned flash the last semester on the side in my spare time and because design work was all I could get.

To be honest, 99% of what I use now was learned after college, and the majority was learning software, honing up design work, and job experience. Most jobs require a Bachelor's degree, but personally if I had it to go over, I'd get a degree from a state college since most of them have an art or design program. Plus it would be a fraction of the cost. The bulk of what is important is that you have hands-on experience and that is mostly up to you to do for yourself.

Yea, I would love to go to UF. But it's slowly becoming an Ivy League school, and it's getting much harder to be accepted.

I get Bright Futures Scholarship here in Florida, so my tuition there would pretty much be paid for.

I am split between whether I would like to continue with Photography, or some kind of design. As I have worked in both at school. I agree with you about the hands-on experience. I am mostly self-taught when it comes to photography. Just playing around with it, and working things out on my own is one of the best ways to retain artistic skills.

 

I had two friends graduate from SCAD (the one in Savannah) and neither of them are making any money and they are both over 100k in debt in school loans alone.

I wish some one had told me not to get eyeball deep in debt for a degree that qualifies you for a job that barely keeps you above the poverty line. In the real world, a degree means one thing... it says "i'm smart enough to learn". but companies dont give a shit about degree's (especially undergrad degree's). what they look for is experience. go on monster and look up jobs in your field. all of them will say minimum 3 years experience required. or 5 years, or sometimes more. you DO NOT want to pay 25k a year in tuition to come out making 30k a year, which is exactly what you can expect to make coming right out of college with little to no experience. that is almost universal. there are a few exceptions, engineers and people with highly technical specialized degree's start out much higher. but even doctors dont make shit after they graduate, they have to wait until they are done with their residency (there's that experience i was telling you about) to make any serious money. i graduated clemson with 25k in student loans, it would have been more but i did the transfer program from a technical school. Just that 25k is about $300 a month in loan bills. so you do the math and see how much 100k in loans will be monthly. you'll be paying them off the rest ofyour life.

Here's another example. My gf went to school for graphic design. she is from NC. she went to clemson because of their program. out of state tuition was about 20k plus a year. she is now over 100k in debt and makes less than 30k a year (God i hope she doesn't read this). she literally cannot afford her bills. she is trying to do debt consolidation but is now looking for a new apartment because she cannot afford hers. its causing some stress on our relationship because i have to pay for both of us for everything we do, she cant even afford to pick up dinner on teh way to my place. Does that sound like fun?

SCAD is a great school but in the real world employers care way more about your experience and interpersonal skills than they do about the name of the school on your degree. My advice is to find something more affordable

 

I totally know what you mean by all of it.

I don't think I could make myself become that in debt.

I think the perfect thing for me to do is to go to the State school, for cheap. Make a kickass portfolio. Learn and create as much as I can. And then apply to some schools for a masters with my kickass portfolio and see what happens.

 

another piece of advice i wish someone had given me, do any and all internships you can find, no matter how crappy. even if you dont get paid, the experience is worth it. nothing is more frustrating than trying to find a job and not having the experience they want but having the degree

Hey look into Daytona State for your AA they have an extremely good photography department there, www.daytonastate.edu and it's a state school soo bright futures would cover it.
