You know, i never thought about this until today when i was at a red light and saw the gmc canyon and the chevy colorado. Why do both companies exist? I'm not saying this because i'm against US auto makers, i'm genuinely curious. they make the exact same vehicles down to every detail. the only difference is the badging. is there a financial reason for this? does anyone know?

I know people that want to have a GM vehilce but don't want the Chevy logo and have instead gone for the GMC. I know it's stupid but hey it's his money not mine so whatever.

Probably just branding. I'm pretty sure GMC is only trucks.

Funny thing -- I knew someone who bragged about how much he loved his GMC but absolutely HATED Chevrolet. I said "You realize it's the exact same vehicle, right?" Then began the cussing and maniacal ranting about how wrong I was.

Guess the marketing departments were doing a good job.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
x2. It is makes no sense to me and isn't very cost effective. Drop the GMC name since Chevy has greater name recognition.

Apparently GMC has a little better quality control for the vehicles they put out. This is entirely hearsay though.

This is part of the reason I believe Domestics are doing so shitty. They're competing against themselves and have to dump all this money into R and D and they're selling the same number of vehicles. Anyone remember Plymouth? No more...

I realise Toyota has Lexus and Scion. But they do radically different things with them. So instead of competing for the same market they reach ALL the market.

No different than Ford, Mecury, and Lincoln. Basically the same vehicles with some flair added so to speak.

kinda the same way with ford and mercury and lincoln......................and mazda to an extent...................they have roughly the same vehicles.

gmc is supposedly a little higher class than chevy.

When i was in the market for the truck, i also considered both, the main difference between the two is the interior, gmc canyon had leather, sky roof, and a lot more details, but yes, is stupid to have 2 companies that makes the same product, just add the damn option for leather and sky roof to the Chevrolet Colorado....

But isn't that the same as the Silverado 2500 hd? what do you mean you want a truck not a name? is the GMC suppose to be better? is it cheaper since it doesn't say chevy?

good point, but my question applies to those makes too. Although, Lincoln makes some things hte other two dont. from what i can tell GMC and Chevy are exactly identical. are they not?

see, i didn't know that gmc offered different options. do you know if thats the same in the states or just a Mexico thing (you people are all fucked up so i wouldn't be surprised :))

i'm not the only nd, dont forget ND 2.0....

Isuzu actually designed the Colorado/Canyon and I hear they are working on a new design, but who knows when it will come out. Hopefully they will look better. By the way, GMC and Chevrolet trucks have been built on the same assembly lines since 1973. In the early nineties I worked at a GMC dealer and sometimes a truck would come in from the factory with GMC wheels on one side and Chevy wheels on the other. Quality control at its finest.

i haven't seen any isuzu trucks in years. those old ones are bullet proof though. my friends dad has an old mid 80's diesel pup that is still running strong. back in high school he was approached by a middle eastern dude and offered cash for it. the guy said he buys them and ships them to random places in the middle east because they are in high demand since they never die. they mount guns to the bed and drive them all over place

shut up, both of you. you better be careful chris or you'll be dead to me again....
