Hey gang, long time no chat. Glad to see everybody still active and kicking ass. I just recently installed dual group24 batteries in my 2008 Tacoma and upgraded to 1/0 wire from alternator to the fuse box hot. Then from the fusebox there is another hot wire that goes to the + battery terminal. I need to upgrade this wire as well but I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the fusebox apart to do this....anybody???

I'm sure lots of CAR AUDIO guys have done this, but I can't find much for it online. And just to answer ya'lls question in advance: I'm going to upgrade to a 270 AMP alternator to power some massive radio Linear Transmitters that draw near 210 amps.

    Thanks gang.

Holy Crap! Sorry I can't answer your question OP, but are you also planning to weld the guy next to you at the stoplight's door shut? With that much juice, just keep her below 88 mph...

X2! Sorry can't answer you, but I'll give you a bump, at the same time asking, What are you powering these things for?

There being powered for long distance radio communications. One of the transmitters draws 30 amps the other draws 180 amps. The radio alone draws 10 amps. So that's almost a grand total of 220 amp MAX draw from my radio setup. That leaves me with 50 amps to run the truck with a 270 amp alt.

I currently have a dual battery setup, but will add 2 more group 24 batteries in the bed soon. I have 1/0 welding cable powering the transmitters, and 1/0 used for parralleling the batteries, and 1/0 for added grounds. VOLTAGE drop is my enemy. Radio transmission makes SPL audio boys amp draw look like a fucking joke. This is a small mobile station compared to some of the heavy keydowner's I run with. Anyhow, take care, and I'm hoping to get some info on upgrading the + wire coming from the fuse box to the + on the battery still.

Take care guys. Thanks for bump'n the thread.
    Peace.

Here's the dual group24 battery install I just finished. It turned out nice. These are BIG batteries, not the tiny group 34 or 43? that most offroaders are using. I had to move the fuse box towards the firewall 6", then rewire everything else to lengthen the connections from the alternator, fuse, grounds etc. PITA...but it turned out PIMP.

I'm adding two more (total of 4 batteries then) soon to help keep up with the power demands of a CONSTANT draw of 230 amps (this is NOT like car audio draw, this shit is constant...not a quick bass hit...there is little to no recovery during a radio keydown like hardcore audio guys have)

I know I know, most think I'm over killing but far from this. I'm trying to keep amp demands ok while keeping voltages along the lines constant. a few volts of loss = hundreds of lost watts of output.

    Wow that is serious.

270a x 12v= 3240w though I would think they would use more power than that? I know nothing about radio transmission though.

You can't just do the math on the voltage and amperage and get output. Efficiency is a big deal......but thanks Fracture, I do appreciate the euqation amps x volts = watts -;)

Here is the radio gear that is sucking so much juice. It's AMP hungry I tell ya ! It destroys VOLTS like no other. Hence 1/0 Welding cable.

Damn! Do you even need to turn on heat in the Winter? All that has to put out some heat! What are you transmitting? Ham radio or something along those lines?

I'd like to see you mount those in your Tacoma and still beable to stuff enough alternators under the hood to power them.....you see 06sr5, I actually own what I'm talking about. I can throw some other homebrew linear transmitter's electrical draw specs at you that I don't own and that would make those ns1's look like Childs play. Don't make me prove it to you. So unless you have some knowledge or are interested in this thread, you just shutup and CLEAN MY TRUCK.

Just out of curiousity OP, looking at your dual batt setup, do you think you'll have any heat issues with those? I know that high heat eats batteries like they're going out of style.

Why not just run another wire direct from the alternator to the batteries? You're going to run your radio equipment directly from the batteries, right? I don't see why you'd have to mess with the stock fuse box.

The alternator on the truck now is only a single pole alt. There is absolutely no room for more than one positive lug feed off this oem 130 amp unit. I'm currently trying to squeeze every bit of efficiency I can out of it....the radio equipment is only being run at half power because of my lack of available current. When I get my Ho 270 amp unit I'm going to see if they offer it in a dual stud design, although I don't think they do.....

Oh, and about the batteries getting hot....and losing their life expectancy; I keep a voltage meter in the cab so I can monitor the drop. I let off the key before drawing the batteries below 12 volts. After I order the new alt, and do some 1/0 cable upgrade I should all but eliminate voltage drop along my supply lines...
If I keydown at night For too long at night my lights almost shutoff lol

    This made me LOL.

Seriously OP, what are you doing with this mobile radio (station)? Why not just have a set up at home for all this equipment?

Hmm.. do you have to wear lead plates over your junk to operate those? Yikes! Doesn't a normal amateur radio pull less than 10A in a mobile install?

How about a pair of T605's they will give you 225 amps. Just before I retired from the PD's the Crown Vic's alt. was at 280 amps and they are not a lot bigger then the stock Toyota alternator with a single wire. That's a lot of smoke what are you using for an antenna? ( by the way I do have a clue 73's N3LYT)
