AK or AR...... convince me!

Hey guys, as the title states, Ill be in the market for one of these gems here soon and unfortunately I have no idea what I want to buy. Im sure eventually ill have one of each (or more), however, I dont have the funds to get both at the time.

From what I have heard, AK's are less accurate but are the "glock" of rifles. Having some of the largest production numbers over time and given the durability I am swayed this way at the moment. Not to mention prices are typically cheaper.

From what I have read in order to have the "best" AR you have to build your own.... which i could do, however, I have no knowledge on the matter of good brands ect.

Anyhow, just looking for some input either way, and if you choose AR>AK or AK>AR please tell me why and what "setup"/brand you would choose.

Depends entirely on what you're using it for. What do you see yourself doing with it? If you're just driving out of town to do some target practice its going to be personal preference. If I were you I would get some trigger time behind both and see what feels better for you. My AK is plenty accurate within a couple hundred meters, if you wanna reach out further an AR will be helpful. Yes, the AK is ridiculously sturdy but an AR will more than suffice in that department too. . . As long as you properly clean and maintain your weapons you're fine. A lot of factors here

You can find AK's that are just as accurate as any AR. Will some knock off 300 dollar AK be top notch? Of course not but if you do your research, you can find some really fine AK's. Arsenals are really nice and will run you around 700.

 

Thanks for the quick response. The main idea will be going out on the weekends as well as having a rifle that can be used for HD. In a situation where ammo becomes scarce I was thinking 7.26 may be easier to come by, but that is just opinion and I could be way off base. I have a little trigger time behind both and in all honesty I like both of them quite a bit. Not a great shot with either but practice with either of them will tidy that up.

 

Your AR or AK is not a sniper rifle, I can hit the plinker @ 100 and 200 yards all day with my AK-47 and EoTech. I prefer the AK for reliability. Ive seen too many AR's jam. The real thing you should ask your self, what will you be doing with this rifle. If you are shooting anywhere below 200 yards I suggest AK for accuracy and Punch, anything over that the AR ballistics are much better.

I suggest watching all of this series of videos its a very good unbiased comparison of the AR and the AK and he goes very in depth.

 

I vote AK then. Fun to shoot out in the desert, and more than sufficient for your needs. AR is going to run you a lot more cash for a bunch of extras haha less options to blow your dinero on with an AK. I have had both and I've spent as much on pmags and parts/accessories for the AR as its worth. Get an AK and blow the rest of your money on truck parts

 

Im 37 so Im getting up there in age. I am apolice officer. I know more about firearms than pretty much anything else. I have owned both. Bought cheap crap, bought high end, built my own and tried almost every accessory known to exist.

My advice... buy a basic, flat top, M4 from Colt. Everything is done right. No frills. Holds resale value. Add accessories as you need and can afford.

The AR is superior in pretty much every way... better weight, corrodes less, lighter, better accessories, better ergonomics, better optics platform, better iron sights, faster reloads, better ammo selection, better safety and on and on. Can you build an AR based sniper rifle? Sure. Its the best platform for a 600m sniper rifle where fast follow up shots are key. Not in 5.56 though... in. 308 it is. 5.56 is a 300m round. Past that wind tosses it around too much.

There are a ton of ways to fuck up on your purchase, build, maintenance, etc. To start, buy something basic.

AKs are fun. AKs are not appreciably more reliable than a well maintained AR. I have had very few malfunctions with either... but had several with both.

Now at work I carry a custom LWRC M6 SBR with an AAC SPR/M4 Silencer, Aimpoint T1, Surefire Scout, etc. I have around 5 grand in my gun. Its not for everyone though and silenced weapons is a whole other deal. If you have more questions feel free to ask.

 

AK is less expensive. I would not waste money on an expensive AK. Just as in the larger world use, it is about cheap guns and cheap ammo. The Russian optics are also of a much lower quality but less expensive. I'd only get one if its a toy or you are broke and it is all you can afford. Only use Wolf Military Classic HP in 7.62x39 for defensive ammo.

The question about AK vs AR is like asking which is better... Ford Mustang or Porshe 911? Well the 911 is better... but only if you can afford it and maintain it. If not a Mustang is servicable to get you sround for less money.

 

Probably the most-asked question on gun forums. Hit up Google, man - you'll get more info than you could read in a month. Anything we say here will be a rehash of the same arguments.

 

If you can spare the cash, get a Steyr AUG SA A3.
- About the same length as an AK with stock folded.
- More reliable than an AR out of the box.
- Better trigger than an AR with GI trigger pack.
- Bullpup's shorter sight length no longer a weakness once optical sight is mounted.

It to cold in Alaska (ak) but its perfect here in Arkansas (ar). So defiantly ar. Hahahaahhahahahahahahaha

 

The ACR was so poorly produced they were selling them at a huge discount a few months ago because a new revision was coming out. I dont know if it has yet though. It has lots of drawback with the gas system length and suppressor comapatability. Its also too expensive for what it is. The SCAR is currently the better deal at the same price.

I Say AR but as you can see I do have a AK....id say Buy what you can afford first then get the other...you can never have to many

 

I was in this same conundrum for a long while.

I've got a real nice Polish milled Ak
And a really nice Noveske AR

However, they both have upsides and downsides.

A milled AK can also substitute for a boat anchor, a preacher curl bar, or a ballast to soften the ride of your truck when you throw it in the bed.
