    Most of the fires I make conclude with copious amounts of grey ash.

    It's not toxic for them. Charcoal is actually used to treat poisoning. I doubt your cat knows this as they lick their own asses, but I wouldn't be terribly concerned about it. That being said, my medical license doesn't cover animals so take what I say with a grain of salt.
