I worked as a security guard for 4 years. I've known and delt with many transients. From the ones I've talked to personally, they make more money then I do. Begging is actually a very profitable line of work.

I will pretty much tell you the same thing that has already been said. If you want to help someone who is asking for money, buy them some food and/or drink.

I think some are making a lot from begging but I still will give something usually change but on occasion I've given more especially if they say it's for a beer. A few times I've given as much as $20. I also give to regular charities like the rescue mission, homeless shelter, Salvation Army, etc. I once gave a guy name Charlie who had a sign that said will work for food or money and he's on crutches and kind of dirty looking. I gave him $10 then drove around the block and when I come around he's running down the street to the liquor store.

This. I bought a homeless dude dinner at a Waffle House once back in '10. He was a nice enough guy.

Don't give money to charities for fuck's sake...

Everytime my girlfriend goes to the Dollarstore up the road someone, usually black women, stop her and ask her for money. Nobody ever asks me for money there. Really pisses me off. We're talking about getting her a CCW.

I had a guy in a Whataburger parking lot a few weeks ago tell me a sob story about running out of gas and losing his debit card on a roadtrip. Guy seemed like he was tweaking and a bit sketch so I told him I had no cash and drove off. Two weeks later he approached me at the same Whataburger with a different story, obviously not recognizing me, I told him I had no money, so then he proceeded to demand a cigarette. Then I recognized him, and proceeded to tell him that I recognized him from a few weeks ago when he told me he was visiting from out of town and to GTFO. Never saw him there ago.

^^This is what I do. Usually I get turned down. But the ones who do accept are extremely grateful. Makes my hair stand up usually.

This. I've stopped giving cash. I quit because when I was filling up my truck, dealer only put in half a tank, at a Pilot in Columbia a guy came up to me talking about how he and his kids needed to get back to his home Jacksonville, FL and needed money for gas but refused when I offered to pay it with my card on the pump rather than give him cash.

My grandfather was the type of person who would go up to anyone and strike up a conversation, something that I did not inherit. In the early 90's he asked a few guys that were holding up cardboard signs how much they made in a day. Nobody said less than 100 bucks, and that's tax free of course. Doubt they "work" eight hours either.

My boss keeps granola bars in his truck and hands them out to anyone with a sign, if they will take them.

I have done this when I can.

In the past and also have taken canned food to the soup kitchen and usually don't get too much of it into the soup kitchen because the people who are truly in need welcome getting a few cans of food given to them.

Usually i give money most of the time, i can understand why some people would say " i wont give them because they will only buy beer" but truthfully i would wanna go drink something if it was that bad for me, if you wanna give its up to them what to spend it on, and if you dont want to give no big deal either.

Nowdays with the economy in such a bad state you will see even more people like that, it could happen to anyone, you or me that why i give and i dont care what they buy with it.
