Front Diff and Transfer Case Oil Change Howto

okay questions.

my rear diff took all 3 quartz but

my transfer case only took 2 qts!!!! help? I was pumping it in and it was spitting it back out. so I assumed it was filled. now my question is... how to make sure it's full?

 

okay. it feels a lot smoother. I put Royal purple full syn for the trans case. whew. glad it's done. it was dirtyy..

 

fluid should be level with the bottom of the fill hole. If it seeps out when you open the fill plug then you're full and good to run.

 

Yeah dude, check the instructions I wrote It's 1.8 quarts or something for the transfer case, and 1.1 for the front diff. You're good.

Edit: 1.1 T-case, 1.6 front diff.

 

ahah thanks man. But I think I only did the rear diff and trans case I had no idea where the drain/fill plug was anyone have a picture for the manual transmission location of the front diff?

 

Thinking of doing everything. Front-Tranny-Tcase-Rear with Lucas 75w90. Amazon has smoking deals on the stuff.

 

Dude, I just realized... you've got a prerunner. 2wd doesn't have a front diff or a transfer case. You changed the oil in your manual transmission.

Fortunately, MT also takes 75W90 (although I don't remember how many quarts, but as long as you topped it off so it was running out the fill plug, you're good.)

Thanks for the info and pic's. Made it easy for the first time changing out all
fluids. My transfer case oil looked new and the (2) differentials looked dirty.

24mm socket
12mm socket---skid plate
oil pump came in handy, tight little area with a beer gut

 

I just changed all my gear oils today, very easy to do. I used a oil suction gun, not a pump. I used Red line #57904 GL -5 75W90 front axle, transfer case and rear with Red Line friction modifiier additive #80301. The 6 speed trans oil I installed MT-90 Red Line, #50304.

 

Does the oil suction gun work better then a pump ?

 

This is all I have ever used, never used a pump. My gun sucks up one qt of oil in 2 1/2 loads. One qt from a load to a discharged maybe 2 or 3 mins. I would think it would be faster and less work than a pump. Plus you can use it for a lot of other things.

 

Thanks for the reply. Sounds good. My pump take a thousand strokes - more work then I'd like. What gun do you have ? Amazon has a few - some with no review and some that say they leak all over you so I'd like to get a proven good one. Thanks again.

 

Got mine at a auto parts, I don't know the brand. Had it for years. I'm sure you can pick one up there. The one I have is a 16 oz size.

I saw this thread this morning so i decided to do it.

T Case was easy.

Front diff fill plug wasn't too bad.

Front diff Drain Plug... is fahked.

I sprayed everything with pb blaster this morning but the more I try to remove the drain plug the more I start to mess up the head. It's starting to look close to stripping. Guess I'll just keep shooting it with pb blaster for the rest of the week and try again next weekend. I'll pick up a new drain plug just incase.

Anyone have any recommendations of what to do if it DOES strip out?

 

I just finished doing both differentials and the TC this AM. Easy as pie- thanks for taking the time to prepare this tutorial! I didn't have a 10mm allen wrench for for front differential so I used a 3/8". I used a 15/16 6 point socket for the TC and rear differential. Valvoline 80/90 Dino for LSD, and Transx LSD additive.
