Alaska?

My fiance and I just booked our plane tickets, thanks to my dad, for our honeymoon to Alaska. We are going up there mid June, we'll be flying into Anchorage. What are the must do's and the stay away from's? We would like to see some glaciers, and would like to hit up Denali, but dont really have any solid ideas. We'll be there for 6 full days. We think we are going to get a renta car and just kind of drive around, and check stuff out. But we would like some advice from someone who either lives up there, or has vacationed there and done something similar. Thanks!

 

Went there last year. Sight seeing mostly, did do some Salmon fishing and being from KS that was knew to me and a total blast. Went with my dad, met him in Anchorage (he drove his RV from KS) totally amazing stuff there. Went bear watching @ Katmai, fun but kinda pricey. Stayed at the Scenic View RV park near Nilnilchik (spelling probably wrong), Bob & Brenda (won't forget their names) a couple from AZ own it and operate it during the summertime, you can google it and get views of it. This was an amazing place to stay! Other than that there is just too much to see and do. Already planning a trip back sometime in the near future.

Live in AK! If you are coming up in June the main salmon runs won't be going yet but picking up, if you want to do the local hike it is "Flattop" just ask anyone how to get there, it is a easy hike then gets steep for the last 150 yards or so. 3 hour total if you go slow. Girdwood's Winner Creek Trail is another one but personally haven't hiked it yet.

If you are going to Denali, not sure if you have enough time to drive to Kenai/Soldotna but if you do you should check it out. Another cool place if you have time is the Homer Spit. Lots of good restaurants and fishing from Homer.

1st off, i would drive to talkeetna and do a flight seeing tour of denali, then drive south to whittier check it out for a hour or so then drive to alyeska resort and have dinner while your in Girdwood have lunch/dinner at the "double muskie" , good eats there. drive south to seward and check it out there too, you can drive to kenai/soldotna and check out the kenai river and possibly drive to homer. Not exactly sure what your likes are but definetly do the kenai fords tour. there are tons of things to do but your not going to see it all in 6 days.

 

Awesome. Thanks guys. So far we have the first night in Anchorage, then 2 nights at the Denali Bluff Lodge up in Denali. Then back to Anchorage. We were going to try to make it to Fairbanks, but thats just too far. So then we were thinking about doing both Seward, and Kenai, but I think that will put too much driving time in, and not enough "sight seeing" time. Which would be better? Seward or Kenai? Does anyone know anything about that Denali Bluff Lodge?

 

your going to get a the traditional tourist trap crap. (probably) the best thing for your short duration. cross your fingers for sunny days while your here I hope it is for your trip. you will see some wildlife for sure so bring your camera and get ready. anchorage to denali will be a about a 3.5 to 4 hour trip. on your drive to back down to seward right before going to whittier you can view the portage glacier (whats left of it anyways) they have a great viewing area and a history of the area in the visitors center there you can watch. do the wild life and glacier tour for sure, you do not want to miss out on that. other than that drive carefully on the way down there from anchorage, roads are deadly with the idiots driving south.

 

So you would chose Seward over Kenai for the last part of the trip?

 

maybe, in seward you can see the wildlife sea center (awesome place) but really you can go to seward and kenai the same day.

 

I really want to visit Alaska at some point. A buddy of mine was there for his honeymoon a couple summers ago. Although i think they only did a cruise.

 

You might be there at a good time for the Salmon fishing. I went a few years ago in late June and the King's were there and it was awesome.
Absolutely beautiful place, you will not regret going nor will you ever forget.

 

Yes when I went last year it was prime time for salmon. I had never been salmon fishing before, and it was fun.

 

i went to alaska about 7 years ago, flew in to anchorage as well. one day we drove to Seward and did this 6 hour cruise tour thing. was really amazing. check them out. we saw bald eagles, wales, otters, black bears, moose, seals, glaciers, basically everything you are supposed to see on a cruise in alaska haha. i took this pic with one of those little wind up disposable cameras and it still turned out this good.



^^ we didnt' ride that big one btw. ours was probably just a 100 passenger boat.

 

I concur with JGWheeler, do a cruise. You'll see all the good stuff that way without getting bored with an area, at least in SE Alaska. I spent almost all my time in Ketchikan and Juneau so I can't tell you about the main land mass. If you can get a few extra days to get out to Nome and explore I would highly recommend that as well.

 

the chocolate waterfall at Alaska Wild Berry is pretty cool too. that's another cool place to go in anchorage.



also make sure you go somewhere high enough with a clear view so you you can say you've seen Mount Mickenly (tallest mountain in north america!).

ooohh and go to Wassila and see sarah palins dad's house. it looked pretty cool on Larry The Cable Guys Only In America
