Sorry, I forgot we don't do sarcasm here at TW. :D Of course you aren't constantly wrestling people down. But aside from those TV shows that we have now established are complete bs, I have never seen a cop wrestle anyone down, ever. So... Meh. Whatever. We have negated the entire discussion.

I wouldn't get in a fist fight for my sister, let alone a cop I don't know. But that's me, I'd just hurt myself.

Bedtime for me, before this gets any more ridiculous.

Well, cop or not, you don't get any professional courtesy where I am. If you're getting your ass beat, hell yeah I'm going to help you. If you're breaking the law, I'm not. You can't enforce the laws if you aren't subject to them yourself. Where does it end? You get to speed? How about beat your spouse too? I dunno, who draws the line?

Folks get hung up on "professional courtesy". It's reall discretion and "normal people" get the benefits of it all the time. I know cops who let chicks with big chests/certain groups of folks/anyone with a "Keep calm and Chive on" sticker off because that's what they do.

Because he enforces the law?? It's sad that you would expect to be allowed to break the law- That is the exact problem with "professional courtesy"

Like YOU said it's called discretion.

I've never used one personally but have ridden with friends and they were very confidant in it until he got a ticket for doing 85 in a 70 detector never went off. I'll call for a smokey check and that usually works out good.

Going back to the OPs original topic - radar detectors.
In Virginia RDs are outlawed here and you'd have to jump through some hoops to be able to use one. If you want to install a RD, this is one method you could use. I can neither confirm nor deny my use of a RD in my truck.
The Bel STi Driver / Magnum detector is shielded so it can't be picked up by the Detector detectors. Pull down the overhead console, remove the Temp/Compass module and velcro the detector inside. Power from the Temp/Compass module wires. Remote display on a prerunner where the 4WD switch is, change tray for 4WD. Laser detection is of course lost but everything else is less than a 10% reduction in range.

YMMV. Don't speed and drive. Hug your Mom.

A buddy of mines brother is a sheriffs deputy and his main rule when he has someone on a ride along is "if im out of the car getting my ass kicked you better be out of the car getting your ass kicked too" lol.

As far as detectors not much more to add. Theyre a good tool if you know how to use them. I dont blatantly speed but its a good thing to keep you in check if you dont realize youre going a little fast. If you have one just to drive like an asshole youre going to get nailed sooner or later anyways. I run an Escort 9500i myself. Its saved me from a few tickets. I dont run it here at home because here in PA only State Troopers can use radar and i rarely drive on trooper patrolled roads. I only use mine for my weekly trips to Delaware in yhe summer because down there they just drive with their radar constanly on. Not to mention theyre sneaky too they will have a car parked in the median with its hood up and it looks like a disabled vehicle til you pass and see the trooper parked behind that car shooting radar.

Ive only ever gotten one ticket when i didnt have a detector. Didnt even think to ask to see the radar reading since i knew how fast i hsd been going and thats the exact speed i got ticketed for.

Mine has probably paid for itself 10 times over. Especially when on the freeway and the cops are just sitting with their radars on. And in Utah it seems like they just drive around with it on. I love mine. Here is where mine is in my truck. sorry its not the best pic

if you feel that you should be allowed to break the law because you are a cop, the feeling is mutual.
yes it is a major problem.
Discretion is one thing.... a sense of entitlement is another.

as far as detectors go... ive stopped a lot of people that use them lol.

I use some hook and loop pieces I got from Radio shack made by 3m. Using the same bracket that comes with it, pop the suction cups out and stick the hook and loop to the bracket. Carefully stick it to the black dots above the mirror. This allows you to place the detector out of sight above the mirror. Cant see it from outside of the truck. This hook and loop works wonderful in the extreme heat my vehicle gets in the summer and the cold in the winter.

As for wiring. I bought an escort hard wire kit. You can get them at best buy for 10 bucks or so. hook it into the radar and run it under the headliner, plastics down the door frame and into the fuse box. Pick up an add a fuse and your golden. Id take a couple pics but don't have my truck with me today. I can take some later tonight if needed.

Radar detectors are a decent tool and all, but its a lot easier if you just hot link into the squad cars GPS signals, program it into Google maps NAV with an audible proximity warning, then you'll always know when to slow down long ahead of time.

My Passport 8500 is mounted near my mirror and hardwired to the fuse box. It has definitely saved me a few times. As others have said, there are many places where speed limits are just set too low for the desolate environment where you are. Not to mention that the Houston area was forced by the Feds to reduce the speed limit so we can Save the Planet (nothing to do with safety). This is why I have a detector. I drive at a speed that is appropriate for the conditions, and if the detector goes off I check my speed vs the speed limit and adjust accordingly.

Like anything else that is a gamble, sometimes you lose and get caught. When that happens I just look at it as a toll or fee for being able to decide for myself what speed is appropriate. Unless you are wreckless or blatant about it odds are you won't get more than maybe one ticket a year. Now let's say that ticket costs you $200. That means it only costs you just over 50 cents a day...that is a risk I can afford!

I use the Valentine 1 in my truck. Ever since I got it I havent received a single speeding ticket. It saves my bacon quite a bit on long freeway drives.

Real? Yes, squad cars all have GPS tracking in them so dispatch can better organize responses. Legal? Check with your local laws I guess.
