Trading in Tacoma on a FORD

I'm going to test drive an F150 4x4 ecoboost Friday.
I am really hesitant to let this Truck I love go.

Seriously, I've driven the ecoboost, father in law owns one. It's definitely got alot of balls at least in non-towing, non-hauling situtations. But the gas mileage is NOT even close to what they advertise. Makes this odd, loud noise when going uphill too...sounds like a pump vibrating. They are neat trucks, but more of a huge car, who needs all those stupid lights blinking and shit? You turn the truck on and, at least in the lariat, theres a full color lcd screen that flashes "BUILT FORD TOUGH"...is that neccessary? lol

Give me my Toyota, simple and easy..

 

Life is short! buy what you like man! Good luck with the ford. I stick with toyota mainly because the resale value is strong.

 

I have a couple hunting buddies that recently bought F-150's. One paid the money to get the Eco Boost motor, the other got the 5.0. The 5.0 is about 1 mpg better on gas. Of course ever driver is different. Just a little info for ya, always good to know all you can when spending this kind of coin. Good luck to ya.

 

Ford F150 is a solid choice and beats the Tacoma in several areas... but that's not really an "Apples to Apples Comparison". The F150 competes with the Tundra.

So, if someone abandons their Tacoma for an F150 it is like going from Mac to PC. They really can't be compared, both offer different things for different folks.

The Ford is big, really big, and wide too. Has sluggish acceleration. Quality is... well, carry a fire extinguisher.

On the upside the towing capacity is through the roof at 10,500 (if properly specd), so if you are towing a small city then this is your truck. The interior is super roomy, I've slept in the back seat comfortably. yes, comfortably. And the center consol is wide enough to eat a meal, or set up a laptop.

Well, in the end it's a matter of choice. And I fr one an]m damn glad not everyone drives a Tacoma. That's what makes my truck such a looker. Everyone wishes they drove my truck - but for some reason they don't. It breaks my heart to see some 30-something smuck in a minivan come pullinginto Starbucks with their windows down, stereo bumping. Guess they feel "cool"? Sad. really sad.

So, I say go OP. Go for the Ford F150. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. But when you get there you might see a bare spot or two...

My advise is to rent an F150 for a week (I have) and try it on, see if it fits you. And if it does, good for you! Just remember to get that fire extinguisher. Really, I'm being serious.

Had a 2008 F150 & a 2003 F250 (7.3 Powerstroke) and had trouble with both. The stroker was lifted & chipped, it was a beast, but man I want it to run when I turn the key and not have to have a rental when it's in the shop.

I was a GMC truck man my whole driving career, my last 2002 Sierra started having issues and very costly ones to boot, but a little voice in my head said (Tacoma) well I bought my 05 and have never looked back. Think about it and as previously mentioned rent one if you can, if not I wish you luck.

 

You all make really good points and since I posted that I have been reading about problem after problem with the ecoboost. I drive an F250 4x4 off road for work and it is one tough truck. Gas milage sucks though and everytime I park it and get into my Tacoma it is such a pleasure. Considering what I've just read, the state of the economy and the talk of gas prices going through the roof, and of course all of your valued advice, I may tell the Ford dealer thanks but no thanks and go see about a 4x4 Tacoma.

Taco is really all you need. I tow a 4000 lb boat, I haul mulch and firewood, my 4wheeler fits in the back perfect and if I'm a light foot I get close to 20 mpg. Plus I think my 1Gr will outlast almost every other motor out there properly maintained of course.

I just traded an F350 Powerstroke in for my '11 Taco (had a '96 Taco before the Powerstroke). The Powerstroke was the second Ford I owned and the second Ford that gave me nothing but trouble. From Gremlin's in the electrical system causing the windshield wipers to kick on at random times, the door buzzer to chime for hours, headlights to mysteriously shut off for several minutes at a time, to $7,000 in repair costs on the Powerstroke over a two year time span. First Ford was literally Found on Road Dead when a circuit board sh!t the bed while I was doing 55 down the road. Maybe Ford has gotten better since they almost went belly up a few years back and are putting more work into producing quality vehicles, but I would stick with the Taco if I were you. My .02

 

The new F150's are nice I looked at them for a couple months before I got my tacoma. The ecoboost sounds great but they dont get the claimed fuel mileage and you can find a bunch of complaints regarding misfiring, cutting out under boost.

Rather than provide internet only commentary my friend has the ecoboost f150 and at 6000 miles he is averaging 14.7mpg.

The 5.0 seems good to go other than the timing chain guides have been causing problems.

You will notice the typical ford lack of quality every time you open and close the doors the entire door and dash rattle with that cheap feel.

If I was in the market for another large truck (I came from 06 tundra) I would buy a new tundra with the 5.7 over the ford. Chevy, dodge, gmc hell no.....

Sounds like "problem after problem" is one issue that no one can pin down to the EcoBoost. I have heard time and time again that the MPG while towing suck, which is too bad. I drove an EcoBoost and was thoroughly impressed, and pulled 21 mpg on the highway.

I don't think you will make a bad choice between a Tacoma or an F-150, but the F-150 is a solid, solid truck. I have 2 friends with new Lariats, and they both haven't had any kind of problems.

Congrats on whatever new truck you purchase!

 

At least everyone gave you an somewhat unbiased opinion. That's why I love this forum... If you were to go on the Ford forums and say you wanted a Tacoma or a Tundra you would probably get flamed!
