Window Chip ~ What to do?

Heard a loud crack on the windshield on the way home today and found these two chips. They're the two bright white (blurry) dots in the photo just above the defrost vent louvers. (Sorry about the pic, it was the least blurry one and the best I could do taking a picture of glass.) The chips are small and my main concern is how to keep them from becoming worse and/or spider-webbing (if they do at all). I've had chips before in other vehicles and did nothing about them and they turned out not getting worse. Any input?

 

You can take them to a Safelight or similar place and see what they will charge you to patch them...Call you insurance provider and report it- They'll send you to safelight or another place like that to get it patched or the window replaced.

 

I'm in the same boat as you are. Mine has had a tiny piece knocked out of it for over a year now though. Probably a tiny bit bigger then your bigger one of the two. I was told to go to a body shop or someplace like that and they will put some sort of sealant in it to protect it from getting worse and then once it hardens, they sand it down.

 

It's hard to tell by the pic, but it doesn't look like you need to worry about that one. If it's an actual crack, then you should have an autoglass company come out and epoxy it, but I've got chips like that all over my windshield and it hasn't broken. If it's a little star like chip with small cracks spreading from it, those are the ones to worry about. Water/dirt gets in them, on top of normal expansion of the glass due to temperature variances and they will spread quickly.

Windsheild guys have some little vacume/pump epoxy thing that will fill/seal up those chips for cheap. I've heard it called "bullet hole repair" but i'm sure the process has an actual name, plus at some places if you have this done and it ends up cracking anyway they replace the glass for free. The chips disappear almost 100%.

If they do turn into cracks...your insurance company will replace your windshield with no additional cost to you (as long as you are fully covered).

 

I called my insurance guy to ask for a recommendation on where to take my car when the windshield was dinged because I figured he would know where to send me... but I sure as hell didn't file a claim for the $50 repair work. I'm not sure if you're saying to file a claim or not, but it's absolutely not worth it. (Also, unless you have zero deductible, you can't file the claim anyway.)

 

STOP! Do get it fixed by windshield repair person/place but DO NOT let your insurance cover it. I did 3 of those like that & it showed up as incidents or hits on your record. When buying different insurance they told me I had all these extra claims & I was like, WTF? Just pay the 30 - 50 bucks yourself & not have that shit on your record. Really stupid shit when you can't use glass coverage to keep them from having to replace your whole windshield when cracks travel.

 

The windshield guy always gives me a shieet of clear quarter-sized dots similiar to clear 3M to cover any future ones. He said if dirt & water gets in there, temp changes can make it crack.

Most of mine have lasted for good, but my last one was a good ding even fixed & only a year. My windshield cracked finally cracked all the way across this winter.

All have been done out of pocket $30-40 bux.

You can actually buy a windshield small crack/chip repair kit from the auto department at Wally World. I guy I work with bought one for a small crack in his Tacoma windshield. I think it cost about $8 bucks. He said it worked fine.

 

^^^ Thought about that but the dude who does mine has perfect record of no cracks afterwards so just let him do it.

 

Not in my experience. They say it is intended to prevent the chip from spreading, but they can't guarantee it.

 

i bought a window chip repair kit from NAPA (you can get them at any auto store though) when i first got my truck and it worked great.... got another chip on my move down to Baltimore a week ago and I plan on getting the same kit to fix that one too.

 

Check you insurance cocerage. I have full coverage and I have my windshield replaed every spring. I drive all interstate and by spring my windshield is chipped and looks like it was sand blasted. I call the insurance agent and he gives me the OK. I have about 5 replacement windshield so far. This is will be the 1st one for the taco. The claims have not gone against me. It goes against your comprehensive. At least that is th way it works for me. I have State Farm. In fact I have used my comprehensive to replace hubcaps on cars, etc. I was state the cause was vandelisim, not collision.

 

Ive had 3 deep chips in my WS for 2+ years and there has been no spider webbing or anything
