weight capacity of cargo in back of truck

ok, i've read some various threads about GVW and max. cargo capacities, etc. but i haven't just seen a simple answer. i know the question depends on various things (passengers, tires, etc.), but i'm just lookin for a general/simple answer. the other day i went to pick up a big metal stacking mechanics tool box at menards for a friend. the boxes said 230 pounds for the bottom box and 180 pounds for the top. that's 410 pounds total, and the back end of my toyota dropped almost to the point of bottoming out. i mean it appeared loaded to the max. and i have the 4 leaf spring pack! i was blown away- seriously, 410 pounds is nothing?!!? i mean, that's a couple buddies, a case of beer, and maybe 1 fishing pole. so, seriously, what's is the "max" weight that i can put in the back end? i now it depends on passengers, etc... but just a general answer give or take a hundred pounds.... 400? 650? 900lbs? opinions?

 

btw... 2012 4x4 double cab v6 sr5....

 

iirc, 1295 pounds. take out your weight and that leaves you with the theoretical payload you can carry.

alot of threads on here about how bad even the tsb springs suck, never mind the 3 spring packs.

most people seem to think that toyota flat out lies about the payload capability of our trucks. i just did the tsb, but haven't yet loaded it up yet. if it's still horrendous, i guess i'll be forced to go aftermarket spring pack. i am kind of expecting to have to do this because of the number of people here who have complained about it.

Answer - The 4 leaf pack sucks too

 

The maximum weight is actually zero I think on the 3 leaf pack. The 4 leaf raises that to about 100 pounds . I wish I were kidding . Even a 275# camper shell will sag the springs. You basically can't do anything but haul a few sacks of groceries, or maybe a couple bicycles. Try adding a real rear bumper, a nice shell, and a heavy duty rubber bed mat, and you'll be on the stops. Anything close to the max load or towing will pin the rear to the stops. The best option would be to get a credit from Toyota and buy a quality aftermarket pack of 9 to 11 leaves depending on intended load. I never even considered the TSB because I use my truck for trucky things.

idk. i don’t have the TSB i just have the 3 pack and i have had over 300# had like 3 people. i know my brother is like 180 his friend is that maybe a little more and another person and a dog and i did not hit bump stops going out back to shoot. also 2 weeks ago me and dad went and got the 2 man ladder tree stand thats 100# and i could not even tell it was back there.

 

I'm jaded Mine came with the shell and was basically already at it's limit. I needed airbags to carry anything, and now I have the All-Pro expo pack.

 

The springs suck! I had a light coating of dust and look how they sag! Only 1/2 inch off the bump stops...

 

Maybe that topsoil was full of earthworms!

 

Before the AAL, it hit the bump stops with a feather pillow in it. I've had 500#+ in it since and it barely moves.
