for a 3 day pack, how much clothing are you putting in it? i mean, i can wear the same pair of pants for 3 days. i really don't see a need for a bag full of clothes. maybe a couple of t-shirts and a few pairs of socks. i'd be more focused on food/water and any tools you think might come in handy.

    thoughts?

for clothes all I have in my bag is one change plus a pair or cold weather undershirt and underdraws.

Me too:D I went archery shooting for the first time a few weeks ago and I really liked it! It was a Hoyt, not sure of the model though.

I carry some basic gear in my truck, but I am quickly running out of room. I'm debating on buying a bed mounted tool box, but don't know if I want to give up the room as I use my truck for hauling my dirt bike quite often.

    Right now I carry:
    Small tool box
    Toilet paper
2 boxes of 12 gauge shells
    500 rds of .22 ammo
LED Mag light and extra battries
    Jumper cables
    rain gear
    snow gloves
    boonie hat
    sun glasses
    Gas can
    baby wipes
    K-bar
    swim trunks
    work gloves

Also carry a surplus 7.62 ammo can with:

2 boxes of .45 ACP ammo
2 extra mags for my 1911
40 rds of 45-70 ammo for my Marlin Guide gun
    cleaning kit

I have a BOB that is usually in my truck that contains:

    Small first aid kit
    a few bottles of water
    compass
    duct tape
    state map
    water purification tabs
a lighter and matches in a waterproof container
a zip loc baggie filled with dryer lint for tinder
    chap stick
    insect repellant
    emergency blanket
    granola bars, nuts, protein bars
    2 pairs of warm socks
    a thermal top and bottom
    wool watch cap
    leather gloves
    100 ft of 550 cord
    led flashlight and extra batteries
    skinning knife
    adjustable wrench
    small vice grips
    Leatherman
a book on survival tactics and edible plants

I slowly keep adding small items as I think of them, it wont save me from every situation but I feel better prepared than the average Joe and figure it would help me survive most situations.

No rivers or mountains anywhere near me. It's very urban with a few mesquite tree fields along the way back home. I also removed all camo from my bag as I felt all that would do is draw unwanted attention to myself if I ever had to use it.

i think i'm ready to start prepping food. i want to start out small and get what i can afford. besides the protein bars and the like, is there anything i can pick up at the grocery store that i can keep in storage for some time? so far i have grabbed 6 gallons of water...thats it.

oh and on the topic of water, i received in the mail today my waterbob. hope i never need to use it, but i have it if need be.

If it came down to that, i'd strip down and cross in my underwear or naked but i definitely agree with you about the socks. If you're walking, your feet are the most important things to keep dry and as comfy as possible. Get a blister and then it gets infected, could cripple you.

Before you buy too much, make a rotation schedule. Plan out what you want to buy, then start looking at expiry dates, etc. You want to incorporate all of your stored food (and water!) into your regular grocery routine, and replace it as it gets used.

There's nothing more dangerous than a man with a plan.

Check out how to store food in Mylar bags. You can store rice and beans for 15-20 years if packed right. I've got a few types of beans, 3 types of rice, oat meal, and freeze dried strawberries all sealed up in Mylar bags with O2 absorbers in them. I need to work on my water storage.
For water you want to stay away from the gallon jugs that look like milk jugs. They are low quality plastic and will deteriorate over time.
Wal mart sells 7 gallon BPA free water jugs in the camping section that work pretty well. Just rotate the water out every 6 months.

good info thanks! yeah i saw the quality of the plastic the milk jug ones looked like. it may not be much better, but IIRC i got deer park jugs which are a little more substantial compared to the milk jug thickness.

I got 2 of those blue 7gal carboys, I had been using them for work and I realized they would be great to store some drinking water in the garage, especially because they are only like $7 each! We live in an old condo complex, and it seems like twice a year a water main breaks and we are without water for at least a day or two. Plus, when a hurricane hits the coast, even people this far inland freak out and you can't find any more water in grocery stores... I just need to remember to rotate the water out.

Empty Soda bottles work great for water containers too.

I had our water shut off at the meter last summer b/c I was doing plumbing work in the bathroom. I also had a guy over retexturing the walls at the same time. He needed water to mix the mud so I just used some water I had stored :D. You never know when your preps will come in handy!

Great thread, and has got me considering some things that I really should have in my truck. Not so much for the zombie apocolypse, but just in case stuff.

One thing is a med kit. What should be in something like this? I mean, how big do you have to go? Is there a place where one is already put together, or should I create my own?

I carry a small sports first aid kit. Has a bit more than a basic one. It has a small splint and triangular bandages, etc.
