My radar detector has saved my ass a few times, detects state patrol from like 2 miles away on the Ka band

I actually did a ride along with a city police officer in high school for a class. I got to help arrest a drunk driver, kinda cool. And yeah, seemed like radar detectors were a bit on the unhelpful side anyway. Besides, they were illegal there anyway.

I've had a few warnings, a $65 ticket for 12 over, and $235 for... ummm... an embarassing amount over. 23 MPH. Ouch. Deserved that one. Hell, 23 over, at least I got my money's worth! On that particular night, it kinda felt worth it. I don't bs the cops, no story about my aunt dying or whatever. "Why were you going that fast?" Because I want to get where I'm headed as fast as possible. I said that once, too. The cop kinda gave me a funny look and then told me there's an extra charge for being in excess of 10 mph over the limit, but he decided to write the ticket for 9 over instead of 12 over so I don't have to pay the fee. Apparently the lack of BS worked on him to some extent.

So since we have a cop here I'd like to ask/express an opinon: I have no idea how you personally approach a motorist on a speeding stop, but I hate when cops ask, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" Come on, really? It's a stupid cat-and-mouse game and gives the impression cops like toying with people, using that authority to be a jerk. And there's nothing you can do about it because if you call him out on being a jerk you're probably going to be cuffed and cussed and this stop will take 3x as long as it should. What's wrong with a no-nonsense, "Well, I pulled you over for speeding?" Why play the games?

No need to make car radar invisible. Well mounted detector will pick up k and Ka bands from well over mile away (if not more)
Now it needs to be said that in that topic all mounts presented suck big time :D So I guess most of the people will get caught with their detector ON.

There are paints that work, reflectors in car lights are not a issue. Simple IR filter takes care of that (ever wondered why some lights have hue in them)
BTW if you want to see light from Laser just open any camera and remove IR filter. beam will be clearly visible. Add two polarization filters set at 90 degree to cut out visible light and laser beam looks like Jedi lightsaber

The only thing that its hard to make laser unfriendly is license plate. Otherwise its not the question if one can lower reflective profile of the car, its only by how much and with what effort.
    On the side note
not always people buy detectors so they can speed, sometimes it is just to have something to do during 2 hour commute.:D

    ditto

I don't quite do 1000 citations a year but my method is as follows for a non-felony traffic stop

    I'm _______ with _____ dept
    I stopped you for ________
Please hand me your license, registration and proof of insurance

Every now and again it goes a different way but that's a rare occurrence, and the last time it happened, as I was exiting my vehicle, the person I was stopping slung his hand out the window and said "why the fuck are you stopping me? don't you have better things to do?"

He was subsequently arrested for reckless driving (original cause for stop), failure to surrender suspended tags, and operating uninsured

He came very close to getting tased that night too

This because it only lasts a few seconds and it's over pepper spray lasts like 10 minutes and is a slow burn.
It's like every muscle in your body cramping then it doesn't hurt anymore but the day after I was shot with one, voluntary, the next day I was a little sore.

I'm one of those people who gets nervous at a traffic stop for no reason. Not drinking, no drugs/paraphernalia/weapons/poached endangered species/illegal immigrants/kiddie porn in my possession and yet the second the officer walks up my hands start shaking so bad I can barely get my license from my wallet. And then I get more nervous because I'm thinking that they're looking for a nervous reaction in someone who is up to no good. Argh! Can't win.

I don't have a problem with that way of approaching a motorist. I especially like the introduction, never had a cop actually tell me his name. And most of the police who have stopped me were polite. I've had maybe 2-3 who did the "Do you know why I stopped you?" thing. And I had one highway patrol who pulled me over after dark so I turned on my dome light as he approached (the last thing I need in the middle of nowhere is a nervous guy with a gun, pepper mace, and/or taser. I am completely uninterested to know what any of those are like so I figured I'd make it easy for him). Then he stood there and looked at me just long enough for me to get uncomfortable with being stared at and not spoken to, and asked him, "So what's up?" He was quite personable after that, and after running my license only gave me a verbal warning, but what a bizarre way to start a traffic stop.

And frankly, if you start out acting sour grapes because you got caught speeding, you can hardly complain when the officer treats you with the same level of respect you treat him. Obviously if he had something better to do he wouldn't be talking to you.

    Bingo!

Also, I'm pretty sure most people get nervous during a traffic stop...it happens

There are plenty of other indicators that something is amiss other than your hands shaking while you retrieve your license

They usually don't sit in one place for extended times and most of the systems only TX location during a packet burst I'm in Maine and we really are not as advanced as other states due to lack of money ours are encrypted, NH is digital every thing including voice and most populated areas are trunked systems. You are better off with a detector and driving with in the limits.
