I'm in central California, so anything around here so far. I've been wanting to go out to a trail called tall trees near yosemitte but for now I've been sticking to the lakes near by like Hume lake, Hensley lake, and pine flat, and yourself?

Can someone help me identify this particular bike pls? I'm looking for a bike for my gf so we can go riding around the river valley in town or go to the mountains to hit some light trails. I found this HardRock, but I'm having trouble finding the exact specs. I would just go take a look at it but its about 20 miles out of town so was hoping to do some research first. The owner does not seem to know much about it except its either 2009 or 2010.

    Ad:

    Specialized HardRock Womens Mountain Bike.

Bought new two seasons ago, ridden once. Been stored in garage since.
    Black and Pink/Purple frame
    26"wheels
    Disc brakes
    Front suspension
Not much else to say it is brand new and never gets used so must sell.

    $450.00 OBO

Specialized says the 2009 was $390 MSRP. The sport was a little more.

In either case, this doesn't look like a Specialized Hardrock circa 2009 or 2010.

So I broke a spoke today and was looking around online to get a replacement, but I have no idea what to get (brand-wise). Does anybody have any suggestions? The bike is a Stumpjumper ht 26er used for xc mainly. It has Mavic rims if that helps. The spokes are 38-40mm. It really sucks because there is an epic group ride tomorrow: 30 road miles + ~25 trail miles.

Do you have a local bike shop? Any spoke they carry should be OK. Plus, they can help you if you need a hand getting the wheel trued.

There is a local bike shop, but shopping online gives me an excuse to get a cassette remover tool also. I like giving the lbs business, but they're pretty expensive. Actually I would have gotten one there if I had realized it earlier; I went there anyways.

I hear ya. But local spoke means epic ride. Otherwise, you'd be down for a few days waiting for the new spoke to arrive

^^ you may need some chain whips as well
Also you can use your brake pads in a pinch to judge trueness if you don't have a stand. If you have discs you can fasten a pair of "somethings" to your frame to act as centering guides.

I don't think they open early enough, but at least I could ride this weekend. Plus I'm having trouble finding single spokes with decent shipping. I was about to check out on bikebling.com when I realized shipping was $15. The bill was only $12.

Could I use my bike chain as a chain whip? (I've never taken a cassette off)

I suppose it you had a loose chain you could wrap it around your large cog and grap both ends to hold your cog set. I'm working on my bike tomorrow, I'll take and post some picts of how its done with a chain whip and cog tool.

    Dang!

For me, at least, the thing that sucks about on-line shopping is you always want to get more stuff to reach the magic "free shipping" dollar amount. So you all you needed was a $2 spoke and you ended up with $50 worth of other stuff

Charles is right about the whip. You'll need it to take the cassette apart--the whip is the easiest tool to use-you cannot take the cassette apart with the wheel on the bike so using your chain won't work.

I'll check to see what spokes I have, I used to build my own wheels, so I have boxes of DT Swiss spokes here and there. If I have some, I'll just send a few your way.

Ok, dug up some spokes, the spokes I have are for 26" wheels and measure 265mm in length. Its been a while, I think they may be from a front wheel build. But the drive side rear is typically a tad shorter, they can be trimmed if needed.

Where is the 38-40mm measure from?

PM if interested, I can drop off a few in the mail.
