Do these 2.7 Tacoma Engines Have Timing Chains or Belts? If one is properly maintained and drivin *right* How many miles can one expect to get out of the life of one? 200,000 300,000 miles etc? Also through mileage intervals are there any known problems or things that need to be replaced. Also I know this has been a big debate and highly covered Issue but for the 2.7 is it 5k or 10k oilchanges. Thanks for all replies

The 2.7 (2TR-FE) Tacoma engine has a timing chain. According to the owners manual the 2.7 oil change interval is 5000 miles or 6 months. The 2.7 also has hydraulic slack adjusters, so no valve clearance adjustments are needed.
As for expected service life, most Toyota engines can go 300,000+ with good maintenance, and I know of no reason why the 2.7 wouldn't do the same.

    Chain.

5K miles on traditional oil; 10K miles on the full synthetic oil which the 2011 4bangers have.

Chain will last pretty much forever. Easily 300K miles in a serviced properly driven engine.

The 2011 and 2012s with the 2.7 requires 0W20 full synthetic changed at 5000 miles.Look in the manual. No matter what the dealer says the manual says 5000 miles and I would do just that to prevent sludge build up.

My gen1 2.7 head cracked between two of the valves at around 350,000 kms. The dealer said it not that common, but more common when compared to the 2.4 22r that was in the pre 96 pick ups.

I checked the chain then, and it didn't look to bad. The truck is still going at 490,000 kms.

I sold it with around 420,000 kms, but if I kept it I would have looked at replacing the chain.
I had a 22r that had the chain get so lose it ate a hole in the water pump housing, which I only figured out after doing 2 head gaskets. That was at around 400,000 kms.
