It has nothing to do with that. Nor is additional drilling (which has been rapidly increasing) reducing prices. Fact is the US has been a net EXPORTER of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel since 2008. Fuel that they could keep in the states for sake of the US economy. Instead we have American companies selling out American citizens. Capitalism may be a wonderful system. But capitalism without conscience is a pernicious evil. They're undercutting their own country for sake of record profits. So much for loyalty.

As for the skyrocketing price of oil, it's speculators, plain and simple. Exxon's CEO, during questioning from the Senate, said that they estimate speculation is raising the price of a barrel of oil by as much as 40%. Delta Airline's CEO estimates it's 20-40%, and Saudi Arabia back in 2008 put the number at a flat $40 a barrel.

Furthermore, while just 10 years ago, the top purchasers of crude were refiners like Exxon, Chevron, and Shell, they're now banks ... BANKS! Why are they buying a product they can't use? Because they buy, sell, trade, and flip shares like they did real estate. And speculation destroyed the housing market too. Read the study: http://libertystreeteconomics.newyo...stor-speculation-and-the-housing-bubble.html/

As for the speculators, check the list. Here's your smoking gun. Wake up America.

Sigh. Once again ... the oil market is an international market. All oil heads to that market, and is traded. So even if this "$16 per barrel" oil existed stateside, it'd still go to market, which, right now, is jacked by speculators treating oil futures like houses in Vegas .. and driving everyone's prices up.

However, as for that "2 trillion barrels" you speak of ... it's locked in oil shales, which currently remain prohibitively expensive to process. While the Israelis have made significant technological advances with oil shales (and their oil shales are of higher quality than ours) the break even point is around $100 per barrel .. which means prices would have to skyrocket far beyond current levels to even make it worth the effort. Visit Battlement Mesa in Colorado sometime, and you'll see that they already started on the shales back in the 1970s. When oil prices came down, Big Oil left ghost towns behind. It's not nearly as cut & dry as you think.

I will occasionally watch the news and catch the average gas price portion... I would be pretty excited to see gas hit $3.65... I paid $4.20 last week and it's gone up since then.
