High gas prices. Gotta sell. How much

Thinking about selling my 2000 Tacoma. Gas prices are too high and I'm spending way to much. Thinking about selli g for a Subaru. Was curious to know what everyone would think a good price to ask was. It's a 2000 v6 sr5 2wd prerunner with 140000 miles and good camper shell with roof racks. 31 tires and new brakes k+n air filter brand new battery and new spark plugs.

Look around on CL. You can probably find enough info to establish a price for your market.

Why not get a bicycle or a scooter? Ride that around town because unless you're buying used with the money from your truck and the subby gets substantially better mileage, you're just trading which bucket the money comes from. Things like insurance, repair and so on add up-especially on a newer car. Plus, gas prices have been up for less than a month and unless you're selling for other reasons, there's reason to hang on for a bit and see what happens.

KBB has never been accurate with Tacoma's, or at least with 1st Gen Tacoma's. They typically sell for well above blue book.

OP, your best bet is to look up similar trucks selling in your area on AutoTrader and CraigsList, that will give you a starting point.

 

get a moped/ or motorcycle.....personally i would feel useless without my truck.

 

Don't sell. Get a cheap motorcycle and use that for most riding. I put more miles on my bike a year than the truck (in NH too). Just a thought....

 

Excellent point. I always wonder why people think it saves more money. Most of the time their net loss will go up.

 

I've seen them on car lots around here, a 2000 with 215,000 miles they are asking around $7500. Personally I don't see them getting that. I agree with the others, get you a bike and ride it. The gas prices will come back down. The 2000 is paid for I assume? Why get a payment to offset the price of gas?

or just check around craigslist and see what similar vehicles in your area are selling for. i know the demand for 1st gen double cabs is pretty crazy and i could get well above what kbb says mine is worth if i wanted to sell.

 

An all wheel-drive turbo-charged Subaru for saving gas? Unless you are referring to the 2012 Impreza, Imprezas, WRXs and Legacys only get in real world driving only get around 21-24 mpg, even less it you're talking about a STi. That's not exactly a huge increase in fuel savings/ratio of the cost to buy an entirely different vehicle. When I had my Subaru WRX STi I was only managing around 14 mpg on 20psi of boost. Not too mention because they are turbo-charged most of them require Premium gas.

 

No scooters for me. I drive all over Cali so I just need something a little more practical. Trust me I love my Tacoma. I hate to think about selling it. It's worse than breaking up with a hot ass girl.

 

I don't want a turbo. Looking at newer legacys. Just want the awd for my dirt roads I'm always on and snow trips

 

Listen to what these people are telling you! I have seen the price of gas go from 23 cents a gallon to 4.80 in my lifetime, ( no old man jokes ok)
One thing I can tell you if the price goes up to 5 dollars it is going to be another shock, and I would sit tight and not worry about a carpayment.
You would have to drive a whole lot of miles every month just to start getting ahead.

I wouldnt get a motorcycle tho lol I had a street bike for 3 years and my taco, and the money ull save from gas ull spend on tires for your bike haha and they are dangerous as shit. not worth it, just buy a bad ass subaru like ur saying

It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it, not what KBB says it is.

I know you didn't ask for opinions on whether or not to sell, so I will just say do all your research before making a move. AWD Subarus are not known for good mileage. And buying a newer vehicle will usually cost you money, even if it's twice the MPG. If you want to save money overall, then try to trade straight across for something with twice the MPG.

basically every subaru that's more than a few years old gets barely any better mileage than your tacoma. They have relatively large engines for their class and AWD. If you wanna get a different car with better mileage make sure it's one that gets at least 35 highway.

 

To the original poster, I am by no means telling you to keep a vehicle that you cannot afford financially to maintain, I am saying you are selling one gas guzzler to get another vehicle that traditionally has never been stellar in the gas savings dept. You also said you wanted a Legacy, hate to tell you but the Legacy isn't all that great on gas. It's a heavy mid-size all wheel drive boat on wheels, remember the Legacy was made to compete with the newer big body Toyota Camrys. Real world driving gets a combined 23-25 mpg in a Subaru Legacy. So you will be spending THOUSANDS to upgrade to a car that will not pay for itself in gas savings. If you want to justify selling and going for a fuel efficient car, your goal should be at LEAST 30+mpg, preferably closer to 32-35mpg to make it worth your while to get a return on your money.

 

Let's say your TACO is paid for, and that you drive 500 miles a week. Let's say in the exchange of your Taco for a Subaru , you spend whatever you sell the taco for and then have to pay 10k more to get the subaru.

Let's further say that gas is $4 now, and peaks at $5, and remains there for 2 years. let us say the Taco gets 17 mpg, and the Subaru 24.

26,000 miles per year taco gas cost @$4 = 26,000/17=~1530 gallons x4= $6120/yr. in gas @$4. At $5, the taco costs $7650/ yr

26,000 miles per year @24 mpg= 1,083 gals. At $4, annual gas cost =$4332 @$5 gas, $5415 per year

Shaking it all out, @ $5 the taco will cost you $7650 per year in gas, Subaru $5415, a savings of $2235/ year. At that pace it will take you nearly 4.5 years to make up the 10,000 cash you laid out. If you borrow money to pay the 10k, the deal gets worse. If the price does not remain at 5 or above, the deal gets worse. If the Subaru has more frequent or more expensive repairs, the deal gets worse.

If your current taco gets more than 17mpg or your Subaru gets less than 24 mpg the deal gets worse. (All of these "gets worse" scenarios extend the payoff time of your decision)

Gets worse if the subaru costs more to insure, as well.

Quick and dirty that is my analysis. It seldom makes sense to buy a new car to save gas unless you drive a LOT of miles, AND your new vehicle gets at least TWICE the mileage of the old one.

 

Agree, but the real problem I am seeing and hearing about is that it is headed to 5 bucks on the East Coast by Memorial Day. That would be over 100 a month. Still does not justify buying a new car.
