What he ^^^ said you can buy alot of gas for what it cost to buy another vehicle, I ride my motorcycle as much as I can in the summer, and I enjoy it that why I bought it, not to save gas, tally up the initial cost, sales tax, property tax( if you have to pay that) increase in insurance, then monthly payments WTF! Cut down on your driving or at least plan your trips.

Back in the day when some one said if you are worried about gas mileage in a 4X4 you shouldn't be buying one.

Well y'all the OP has another problem. His truck is 2WD and apparently he needs a 4WD for ski trips.

Heck that was the secondary reason for my truck being 4WD ahead of wheeling...

I'm not wanting a brand new one. But I see 07 subarus with around 60000 miles and selli g for around 11 to 13. I guess I shouldn't have said gas prices to high. I shoulda said I wanna sell while it's still worth at least something and not years from now when it's even more beat up

4 mpg more than my Tacoma.

24-25 mpg is closer to to the national average, you get 26 that's great. That still doesn't justify the logic in purchasing an entirely different vehicle. If he wants it for ski trips than more power to him, but for fuel savings doesn't make sense.

I had an 08 impreza 2.5i (non turbo hatch). Nice comfy car for Dailey driving but in all honesty it only got about 4-7mpg average than I get with the 4.0 v6 being nice.

Also it depends on what practical means for you. For instance practical for me is loading up tool boxes and traveling for work. Can't do that in a Subaru without a lot of wear on parts.

Good luck dude! The subies are definitely a blast in snowy conditions!! :D

If I were to give an opinion on his decision it would definitely favor keeping the truck.

But it's his decision he's making for himself. Who am I to interfere?

The only reason I interjected is because it seemed like you were only talking about GTs, STis, WRXs, Spec Bs, etc... and not the 2.5i

    Do the math.

Take the # of miles per year that you drive - 20,000 maybe, and divide that by your avg MPG - say 20 (for easy math), that's 1000 gallons of petrol. Multiply times your avg gas price - I dunno - 3.50. So it costs you $3500/yr in gas.

    So get a 35 mpg car. 20000/35 = 570 gals at 3.50 per = $2000.

    Savings from a 20 mpg truck to a 35 mpg car = $1500/yr.

Is it worth it? Will you save what you think? Plug in your #'s and be sure it's all that.

I gotcha it's all good. If you look at my first post in this thread I mentioned all of the Subarus, but focused only on the Legacy once the OP said that's the one he was looking at. Seams like an irrational and expensive upgrade just for some "ski trips," but hey it's not my wallet.

    And to the OP -

The gas budget is getting too expensive for me to, and the Tacoma is my DD.

So when the time is right, I'm going to buy a late 90s or early 00s Honda or Acura that gets 35-40 mpg. It's cost almost nothing to register, almost nothing to insure and some of the prices I'm looking at are about $2500 - $3000 for the vehicle. Not to mention FWD is good enough in most conditions (with good all season tires)

That will become my DD unless I need 4WD.

I'm not panicking. I have a job that comes with a company truck and gas card, so the ride to and from work is free. My truck is about to be paid off as well.:) If things get really bad, I could always stop shaving, no one at work seems to notice.:D

The real question for me is how much is the summer road trip gonna run me.

I feel bad for the guys who are driving their trucks for a commuter rig. I've done the math, a second vehicle usually doesn't pay. You'd really have to sell and buy a smaller car to get serious about cutting your fuel costs.

Wow, that's a rough commute. Can't exactly take the bus either.
