    Your thoughts?

The on-going drug war in Mexico has reached an alarming stage prompting US to consider the deployment of the National Guard to contain violence that have caused the death of over 5,000 people last year including 200 Americans.

Last week, Mexico sent an additional 3,200 soldiers to the border. Increasing the total number of Mexican soldiers combating drug cartel to more than 45,000.

By all means, send the soldiers to the border states to curb the traffic of drugs and illegal aliens, but DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE SEND TROOPS INTO MEXICO TO HELP, EVEN IF THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT WANTS THEM!!! We have enough troops in foreign soil fighting "unwinable" wars.

We need to keep the violence from spilling over into the US but mexico is not our fight. Make it known that its not safe for Americans, if Americans continue to die over there, its their own fault and their own choice.

everyone has that one friend that has all kinds of emotional, mental, and financial problems, but they seem to go around telling everyone else what THEY are doing wrong. America is "that guy". we need to stop focusing on the rest of the worlds problems and start solving our own

Unfortunately they may be thinking just that:
    http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=44503

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the violence in Mexico is “clearly a serious problem” and suggested that the U.S. military might come to the aide of the Mexican military and police, which are battling thousands of armed members of gangs and drug cartels

Of course they fail to mention that this guy was caught smuggling prescription drugs from Mexico into the US, so he moved to Tijuana, where he was allegedly selling prescription drugs from his restaurant... I'll probably avoid Mexico for the time being, but this hardly worries me to the point that I think we need to send troops there.

    effing liberal hippie!!!! hahahahahah

our problem is that we've established ourselves as the "team america:world police" and have to stick our nose in everyone elses shit. the main problem is that we have such a high stake for mexico to curb this since they are our close neighbor. if the cartels take over completely in mexico, it wont take long for it to escalate here even more.

i know, i guess i hate America just like you now

thats why i say station a shit ton of troops and federal agents along the border states and "neutralize" the problem with no mercy, but only if that problem steps foot on US soil. The mexican government seems about as impotent as the iraqi government. why should our soldiers go down there and fight and die for a cause their own people/government wont do anything about? i'm ok with training their military and police. and i'm ok with the mexican government hiring a Merc group to come in and mess some people up (plenty of African countries have done that to combat rebel groups). but why should they get free assistance from us when we are in enough trouble as it is? they can either do it themselves or pay someone to do it (those merc companies are all special forces, a 10 man team has no problem taking out 100 untrained drug lackies). a beggar can't afford to be charitable, and a country falling apart from the inside out cant afford to fight 3, 4, or 10 wars simultaneously.

The problem in Mexico isn't nearly as simple as you might think. There is much information as this has been going on for many many years now, not with so much violence but the drug problem none the less. I agree the US should not send troops into Mexico, and that they should bring there troops home. But to put up a "wall" and say sorry its not our problem is absolutely ludicrous. Bush gave the Mexican gov't over $1.1 billion to fight the drug cartels, and the US gov't has been giving South American countries billions for years before that to combat the drug cartels. The US is the largest consumer of the products they sell, supply demand. It would be nice if drugs vanished from the plant, but that will never happen, people will always find a way. The US policy on drugs makes them extremely profitable to criminals. We learned this a number of years ago with alcohol prohibition and Al Capone did we not? It also however makes it extremely profitable for the police forces, border patrol, and corrections budgets. As-well as anyone the cartel needs to pay off in Mexico and the US. The US supplies most of the guns. Now without going into a gun debate, its no secret that Mexico shares a border with 2 states that have very "relaxed" gun laws. And its not just legal weapons from the US, M16's, grenade launchers, grenade's military weapons. Last year an 18-wheeler full of M-16s was stopped headed to Matamoros, a cartel controlled town. There are a lot of people benefiting in the US from the drug war in Mexico. The US trained the killers. In the 1990's the US trained a bunch of Mexican and Guatemalan special forces. Now those military units have separated from the government and are probably on the cartel payroll. The drug cartels have enough money to pay off, or to buy whom ever, or what ever they want, high ranking Mexican officials, Mexican police, Mexican military, US border guards, US police officers, ect. The US is very involved with the drug problem, and have been for many years. It's only recently that the media has paid so much attention. America is addicted to the drug money from every aspect of the war on drugs, and Mexico's economy is too depend on the drug money to ever stop it. The US military has satellite photos of all the cocaine labs in Peru and Columbia, every opium poppy and cannabis plant being grow in Mexico, and they never took those labs out or burned those fields.

That being said, we also have drug problems here in Canada, and they stem from the same policies, and prohibitionist attitudes. One day someone will realize that we should stop giving billions and billions of dollars to criminals, and instead give it to the people who are in need.

it'll be a US territory, or at least occupied territory before you know it. i guess the Amero won't be far behind. Mexico's been mooching off us for years. if we do take it over...then i'm sure all the drugs will go away. after all, an American would never take a payoff or a bribe now would they? the Cartels need to look into India & Asia...LOTS of customers over there. we can make all the Crystal Meth we need right here thank you very much.

Comment from down side of the border:

BY all means, we don't want or need American troops on Mexican soil, Mexico is an Independent sovereign nation.
If US have all the stats, information, why don't they share all the info with Mexican government??? Some of you say, fuck Mexico, let them deal with the problem, but i tell you something, that its been demonstrated, drug dealing, doesn't recognize borders, nor is indifferent to ones nationality, cartels dont give a damn about the borders, they will keep smuggling drugs into the US no matter what, as long as the drug demand is that high, it will keep that way..

7k people dead, i bet you 99% of them are related to a drug cartel, yes americans being killed too, but what did you expected, dont tell me that only mexicans and colombians are related to cartels... you know it takes both crooked US and Mexican officials/citizens for the smuggling to take effect.

Now, as long as the US doesnt recognize that is a bilateral problem, just like immigration and a lot of issues both countries have, then there is no way it will stop, US is the drug market, Cartels supply drugs, US supply the money and weapons to sustain the cartles... what are both countries prepared to do to solve the problem?

great post, i was hoping you'd chime in. just to clarify, i dont have a "fuck Mexico" mentality, but i do think they need to be the primary solution to their own problem. What pisses me off about mexico is what you said on another thread. you said something like 80% of the country is fanatical catholic and will do whatever the church says, and the government is too greedy to care about the people (i have no idea what that feels like ). so really, nobody is looking out for the people, and for some reason they wont look out for themselves. The problem needs to be addressed with "extreme prejudice". meaning, no mercy for the cartel's. I'd love to see mexico cleaned up and prosper, i'd be down there drinking beer and hitting on senorita's all the damn time! plus, the more Mexico prospers the more America prospers.

Seems simple to me, but alas I am just some dumb coon a$$ from Louisiana.

Need a stimulus plan on building $hit? Well build a big freaking wall. There's your stimulus plan.

If the Chinese can build a wall over the most insane mountain terrain that covers 4000 miles in 200 bc don't tell me we cant build a damn wall to keep people from sneaking over the boarder.

Open two holes in the damn thing. One for exiting one for entering. Dig a trench thats too deep to tunnel under and make the damn thing high enough that you can't get a ladder to get over it. One football field of electric razor wire on both sides and your done.

Maybe the question we should be asking ourselves is why isn't the government willing to even consider this? Too much money from the drug wars perhaps?

completely agree, we need to be aggressive with the problem, believe me, if it was me i would have some of them hang in public squares, government is been slacking a lot of years, thus the situation now.... so I agree, we have the main problem down here, but the solution lies between the two countries.

how many times I've seen posts about people here that have used cocaine/weed/meth and all that shit? that is part of the problem too, whenever you know your neighbor might be into some shit, and you do nothing, that's part of the problem, but yet we all fail to see it that way...
