Yay, finally bought a new 2012

After about a year of wanting one I finally bought a new silver 2012 Pre Runner DCSB with the TRD Sport Extra Package. I wanted grey but they couldn't find any, I should have it on Tuesday. Couple questions.

1. How many USB ports are there, I forget?
2. Will the USB port charge an iPhone?
3. If I wanted to hardwire this iPhone charger, what is the easiset way?

There is one USB plug, not sure if it has charging capabilities. Never plugged anything into mine yet

As far as hard wiring, probably can just tap into your 12v outlet wiring.

 

The USB port charges your iPhone.

 

Is there a write up anywhere on how to do it? Searched but did really find much but could be me.

 

Should be a pretty simple, straight forward job, just pop the panel off and splice two wires...I'll do a search and try to find something similar for you.

 

Yeah I did something similar with a Ford Escape I had years ago. Just not sure about how to pop the panel off. Does it matter what wire I tap off of (positive, negative thing)?

Rather then splicing into a factory wire, an easy, easy way is to use a fuse tap as shown in the pic below. Use a circuit in the fuse panel box that is switched on/off with ignition.

 

theres 1 usb port and it charges iphones. not sure about your last question though.

Well, when you pull the plastic cover off the fuse panel look at the backside of it. It should be stamped on there exactly which fuse is which. (Should be mentioned in the owner's manual also) You will probably find that you have a vacant, switched circuit(s) with no fuse it it presently that you can use. If not look for a 10amp fuse that is switched. I do not have a 2012 Tacoma so can not tell you which circuit is switched, etc.. Hopefully, someone here will provide that info to you. You could just trial and error it as you can cause no harm trying different circuits until you get one that is switched. You might look for a circuit labeled Radio, Gauge or WSH (washer) as they are switched circuits. Again, I'm sure there are vacant switched circuits avail. in the fuse panel you could use. These vacant/unused circuits are there for accessories/options that your vehicle does not have..

Installing your add-a-circuit is as simple as removing your fuse, installing a spare fuse of the same rating in the lower spot of the add-a-circuit, installing the fuse for your add on in the upper spot of the add-a-circuit. You then will insert the whole add-a-circuit assembly into the fuse block.

So, with your install, you get the switched power from your add a circuit and your other wire from your charger, you ground by attaching to an available bolt/screw in the general vicinity of the fuse panel.

Here it is

 

The 2011 has the ATM Mini low profile fuses and I tried a ATM bladed fuse in place of the factory fuse, I used the same amperage and it failed to complete the circuit. The add a circuit indicated in your picture says it for the ATM fuse but no where can I find if it'll work with both the ATM bladed and low profile. Has any one used this to replace the ATM low profile fuse?

Found just what I needed at Waytek.com. Search for ITEM # 46068. There is also a data sheet that can be downloaded and cost ia less than 5 bucks.

 

TW rocks! I'm looking at hardwiring my Escort 9500ix fuzz buster tomorrow in my new 12 Offroad Access and thought I'd look for dash removal pics and came across this post. I didn't know they made such a thing but the fuse tap is just what I need! I had installed it in my previous Tundra and always had ground issues. Will post pics soon. Thanks guys.
