The rise of Ahmadinejad is our own doing.
Iran had a perfectly suitable, democratically elected government under Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. In 1951, with the support of Iran's parliament, PM Mosaddegh was responsible for the nationalization of Iran's oil industry, knocking the UK's Anglo-Iranian Oil Company out of business. This did not sit well with London or Washington. The UK and US decided to orchestrate a coup in 1953 called Operation TPAJAX. This coup eventually gave power to the Shah, who was funded and offered political security by the United States government.
The people of Iran knew where the oil money was going, and were tired of the treachery under the Shah's rule, so in 1979, the Iranian Revolution took place.
The Revolution was strictly anti-Shah and in effect, anti-Western. The Iranians (much like the Vietnamese and Cubans) did not want to see their oil wealth make American oil men rich.
Ahmadinejad is the latest in line of these post-revolutionary Iranians who do not feel that the west should be calling the shots within his borders.
Personally, I think that the stories of nuke building are exagerated by Iran's government, and exagerated further by the fear mongering conservative news shows.
Kim Jong Il was going to start World War 3 during the last election, Osama bin Laden before him.
I think that we are seeing the ripple effect of our slash and burn foreign policy, and this insane idea that we should protect Israel. Israel is not worth American lives. If people feel the dogmatic urge to protect Israel, then they should go there, enlist in the Israeli Army, and get ready for this huge imminent attack that retards like Hal Lindsay have been predicting for as long as I can remember. Ironically a lot of the people that I see posting their will to keep Israel Arab-free are not combat veterans themselves. I think that this is hilarious.
Have you ever watched an NFL game, and you see a woman down on the field commentating, and you think, 'what the hell do you know, lady?' That's the same way that I feel when I see non-veterans talking about how we need to go start a war with this country or that country, with the enemy of the week. You have no idea what you're talking about. It's like listening to the cheerleaders talk about how the game should be played.
I know that this won't be a popular opinion, and for all of you vets, I might not agree with all of you, but you earned the right to talk when it comes to waging war. You earned the right to bust balls when it comes to the military, and I tip my hat to all of you knuckleheads. :drunk:

Even if the US imported more oil from our inferior neighbors to the North our oil companies would just sell it to the highest bidder. There's no dedication when it comes to profits. The US has some of the largest oil reserves on the planet, there's a reason we don't tap into it. When the well runs dry globally the US will still have enough oil to maintain its super power status.

I know that Canada has its own problems, but I'm sure that at least 99% of the reasons that you guys think that the US is batshit insane are justified.

I'm pretty sure I haven't made a single anti US statement in this whole thread .

Not sure what you mean by that nor how it would apply to the discussion at hand .

I've heard it from Canadian relatives. I'm assuming it's not an unpopular sentiment, which I can understand.

First of all , thank you for serving , personally I never did but missed the VietNam draft.
I agree 100% goes back to what i said earlier about how this nation seems to have strayed from a time when were defending others for righteous reasons to being the ones doing the bullying,

Typically you you relish in speaking down to the younger participants, when challenged by a peer you shut up. (Luckily for you there's very few peer's in your age group, makes you feel superior.....eh?). I got your number, respond as you wish.
