That's the answer right there. You've got an extra 2 gallons in the fill tube.

It's good to know you can get 2 more gallons in the tube. I've found another place a little closer that sells ethanol free at a couple of their pumps. A couple of more gallons may make the difference of making it back there to fill up again. I'll give it a try.

Got my best 24.3mpg these past two days. 350+ miles in hilly NY/MA on route 2, 91, 95, among others. Pulled a 10% grade for 5miles. and 6% and 8% a few other times. Kept the gps speedo under 75mph. Even passed 2 cars on a down hill dashed yellow. Very happy for winter gas. I think my soft-top extang cover helped 1-2mpg just like advertised. I used to get 19-20mpg on the same route on summer gas. Can't wait to see how my new additions help.

Thinking about cleaning behind the throttle body (only could get the front so far).

This tank was a bit better, drove to Denver a few times and the weather was warmer.

541.5 miles on 19.456 gallons for 27.8 mpg. Should only get better from here.

Hmmm...I'm not overly disappointed with this last tank. Didn't get any pics this time, phone died.

    Enviroment:
    -91 octane fuel.
    -30x9.5x15 M/Ts. (on stock 3.58 gearing)
    -Mainly city driving, short trips.
-Cold mornings, warmer in the afternoons (30/50)
    -Synth oil.

    Tip tik read, 280 miles. 280x1.1 = 308
    308 miles on 16.7 gallons = 18.44

I could barely get to 400 MPG in the summer with 225s, so when the weather breaks I should see some decent numbers again.

2.7L, 6" lift, 33" MTs, cold air intake and a flowmaster. 182k miles, 13.6 MPG gives about 220 miles on a tank..... Are my tires really that inefficient? Any thoughts?

pikuptruk: you are driving a brick. Then you added an additional 6" of wind resistance and huge heavy tires... That sounds about right. It's not the tires by themselves, it's the whole package. They joy of driving a lifted truck.

These guys in this thread getting really good gas mileage are driving 2wd trucks with light tires and making it a huge point to get good mileage. I only get 21 mpg and I am completely stock save for some 265/75r16 tires and a topper. My mileage went down 2 mpg with the bigger tires and didn't change with the topper.

Sure that makes sense. I was curious to see what other trucks similar to mine were getting as far as mpg...

Did a fillup this evening-498.4 miles-19.52 gallons=25.5 MPG Just cannot believe my great mileage this winter. But it has not been cold here for more than 2 days in a row, and has not been below zero yet(wood being tapped)

    I'm using 85 at this altitude, we have 85, 87, 91.

The only reason higher octane should give better mpg with the I4 is if the higher octane is pure gas vs 10% ethanol, and since I can't find pure gas in my area it really doesn't pay.

I use 87. Never tried anything else. I doubt higher grades improve mileage on a nonturbo 2.7L 4cylinder. I also avoid gas stations with above 10% ethanol like "Wawa" (15%) etc. I can't find <10% ethanol near me, but I'd love to try it and see the difference some day.

Best "mods" I can recommend are:
    -pump your tires up 35psi+
-clean your "mass air flow sensor" ($7 spray can)
-clean your throttle body ($4 spray can)
-Get a bed cover (expensive for 1-2mpg)
    -clean it?
-Try 0w-30 synthetic oil (i haven't done this yet)
-take all your tools out.... come on do you need them all everyday? or only 2x a week?
-Also my insurance has emergency towing for like $5 a year so I got that the last 6 months and garaged my extra coolant/etc that I used to carry around

most guys that are getting higher than 21-24mpg here have 2.4L or 2.7L engines and 2wd - so don't fret too much.

I've only run regular gas since day one. The 2.7 doesn't have different fuel maps to adjust the timing for different octane ratings...so it's designed to run on regular fuel. Anything else isn't worth it.

ive tried 91 only once and it gave me only about an extra 5 miles to the tank, which is obviously not worth it hah, guess ill be fillin up on 87 tomorrow and see how it goes,

I put in 0-20 synthetic when i bought my truck used. Ran it for a month and refilled with 5-20 (0-20 was expensive). When that 0-20 "dino oil flush " came out it was really dark, it looked like it picked up a lot of old oil that had been hanging out in the nooks even after doing a really good job draining the old dino oil initially.
Anyway, the 0-20 was really good, i could obtain 0.8/hour at idle, now just 0.9l/hour at idle - same conditions (of course it could be a difference of 0.01 that tipped the scale).
I liked the 0-20 but probably wouldnt use it if i was working the engine too hard or on inclines.

Did a partial fillup of 8.0 gallons a week ago, and a full fillup tonight of 19.15 gallons. Went 703.8 miles on 27.15 gallons= 25.9 MPG. Another tank and a half with no cold weather below 20F and plenty of days in the 50's and 60's. But I am lovin' the lack of a winter hit on my MPG's. It helps with gas going up 10¢ every 3 or 4 days.

i wanted to see how many miles on a tank i could get. so i thought i go until a little after the low fuel light came on.

long story short. it never did and i ran out of gas at ~375 miles. any one know of a fuse or something as to why low gas light wouldn't come one?
