9mm, given the choices and uses. I'm definitely not rich enough to train with a .45 like I do with my 9mm. I average about 5000 rounds a year, which is enough to make me confident I can hit what I need to hit. At that rate, the difference between the two is a monthly mortgage payment! Time to get some reloading gear!

45 all the way, but it's an easy one for me since our department issues all the ammo. Plus you can read of several officer involved shootings online where they were using a 9 mil and the attacker kept coming at them.
But I understand that 9 mil is alot cheaper to train and shoot with.

I went ahead and bought myself a 9mm yesterday.

    Goes great with my .45

I have the s&w governor with pdx1 rounds. 45 acp, 45 colt and 410 shot shells! cant get much better in my opinion for all around defense! Look it up on youtube. The only downside is the price of the pdx1 rounds but for practice or fun the 45 acp and 410 rounds are a good price

Hands down 1911 .45 all the way.
I carry a Colt Defender everyday in a Crossbreed holster and I shoot a Kimber Team Match II in competition. Competiton, Bigger bullet better chance of cutting the next line as for the reason to carry. It has been said "In like a thumb - and out like a Frisbee"
Some may argue capacity, but that is what pratice is for, hit what you aim at, and you will not need 15 rounds to do it, that and you always carry an extra magazine.
I love 1911s and will always have one.

    9mm JHP+P may expand.
    .45 won't shrink ;)

That said... my go-to self-defense weapon is in fact a G26 with Federal HST 147gr... BUT at home my 1911 loaded with Speer GD 200gr JHP+P is always accessible.

If a law were passed that mandated that we could only own one handgun, I would stick with the 1911, but I find the concealability, weight, and capacity of the G26 to be overall better outside the home.

Both are a good choice. I choose the .45 because it is slightly more versatile. With modern JHPs that are heavy for caliber (9mm in 147gr and .45 in 230gr), you should be well equipped for self defense.

My pistol of choice is a Sig 220 in 45ACP. Yes, I am proficient with a pistol and have qualified for many different organizations with many different calibers and pistols. I do respect the 9sillimeter for what it is; but prefer the comfort of a margin of error in my 45ACP. Do I have an unlimited mag? No; but the average encounter last less than 4 shots and I carry a spare mag (1). Odds are I'm not going to get a lot of chances to put rounds on target so I want each shot to count as much as possible. It has been said a lot in caliber talks; and it is still the truth... 9mm MIGHT expand, 45ACP NEVER shrinks.

    1) Late '90s study; the number has always stuck in my head.

I knew a person that killed people for a living and was good at it, he liked the .45 as a sidearm.

I would get a 9mm glock or H&K USP. I've owned both guns and they were both awesome and affordable. I recommend the USP for it's decocker, the glock for it being easy to clean, mod, and it's a workhorse.

If you're going to trust your life with a gun, why not pick the one that will do the most damage

Anyone who understands guns/ammunition would know that a 45 is stronger/slower bullet and a 9mm is a faster/longer range bullet. personally for HOME DEFENSE i dont need a bullet to go far, i need a bullet to do one of two things, stop someone running at me or simply just lay someone flat out, now dont gwt me wrong you would get that with a 9mm too (after about 4-5 rounds depenfding on whos taking the projectile)
