I think I have to pull the fan shroud and possibly unbolt the AC core and move it forward, did the best I could on the road, but it ran high all the way home, too high

so as chris stated, me and him over heated on the freeway going home here is a more detailed story. i drove out and the temp was fine in the mountain roads, around 185-195ish, but once i got onto the freeway it just kept climbing, went from 199- 238 degrees in about 2 miles, i was freaking out big time cuz new head gasket would suck, so i try to blast the heater and drive slow but the steep grade on the way home wasn't helping, so i reach the red on the temp gauge, pulled to the side of the road, start calling people for advise and help, then chris called turns out hes just ahead of me so we wash the rad as best and we could, right when we pulled away chris's coolant res blows up big time temp is way pass red, and that was outta now here. so we limp to a gas station doing 40mph on the slow lane, washed the rad out, big ass pool of mud water , and manage to get home after getting stuck for about hour n a half

    QUESTION:

I know that they say you turn on the heater to help rid the engine of heat when it's uh, OVERHEATING...and I have, in the past, found that to be very helpful. BUT! How come the heater is blowing out ice cold air (air is off) but still getting hotter and hotter to point that you smell it?

I can't figure that out for the life of me.

    It'll be sore tomorrow

I called my client, left a message told him I'm gonna be late, if I'm gonna go through all that trouble to get at the radiator, I'm gonna clean everything I can lay a hose to in there

Hey everyone, me and John talked to one of the park guys and we are thinking about organizing a get together at FR to help out the park. If we volunteer to do clean up and trail maintenance, it translates into more money for the park by the county. If we give back, it helps that park stay open. I don't know about you, but other than FR and Hollister, there aren't a holy heck of a lot of places where we can do that kind of wheelin in our area.

great day, my truck also overheated on the way out, got up to 250!! once I hit the freeway it dropped slowly but I had to stop in tracy with vin and blast the radiator out. I hope nothing got damaged! right now cruising on the freeway it's around 200-220. Think that's normal? Can't wait to see all the pics!

It was great meeting everyone. Besides frying my alternator, I had a blast. I'll get some pics up tomorrow to share with you guys. We were all suckers for that mud pit:eek:. I got some pretty good actions shots from it.

Eric and Chris, I thought that you guys were going to follow my brother, silver 4Runner, back to Tracy to meet up with me and Alex at the car wash. I was afraid of that overheating issue once all that mud dried up. That happened to me the first time I went through a mud pit a while back. Either way, I'm glad you guys got home safely.

Alex, 200-220 is normal and where it should be.

John, thanks for leading the group and showing us the ropes. Your 4Runner is a beauty. I got some great shots of it.

Alvin was the only smart one that skipped out on the mud. I'm following his lead next time;).

Lucas, Babytruck, Robert, Ruben, nice meeting you guys!!!

We were helping the guys switch their batteries and stayed to jump them. We looked up and all you guys were gone. We tried to catch up, couldn't find you. We waited at the freeway entrance for Eric but didn't see him so we left.

We later saw Eric on the side of the road so we pulled over to help him and after we got him going, that's when Chris' truck started to overheat. Gotta admit it was pretty scary being out in the dark, in the WIND and having those semi trucks come close....:(

Other than that I had a great time, I learned a lot of what to do and what NOT to do. Glad I was able to meet everyone and it felt good that everyone stuck together and took care of each other. I think we would "make good Marines". LOL.

Kudos to uncle with the red Jeep. That guy was a trooper.

You guys took off after you swapped batteries, we tried to catch up to you but you were too far gone already. Good thing though because it was me and Babytruck that found Eric and helped get him home.

I'm gonna pull the fan shroud and move the AC core this morning, I hit it with a hose pretty well in Livermore but it wasn't enough. That mud is a super-fine silt that thoroughly cakes whatever it touches.

Sounds like we all had issues except Alvin of course who was probably the smartest of us all and avoided the mud pit. It was great meeting you all and Vin, Alex and Lucas, you guys just fully convinced me to go with some BAMF sliders. Those kickups looked amazing.

Alvin thanks for the tip about the alternator. Luckily my 4runner started to die right after we go off 130 and I was surrounded by auto repair shops.
