I have an 03' xtra cab. I'm looking at getting a topper. One problem I'm encountering is how do I know if the topper will fit? Will a topper on a 98 ranger fit? what about frontier toppers?

    Thanks

Buy one for an 1st gen Toyota extra cab, it will fit. The others fit the respective brands.

At one time all the manufacturer's trucks had the same size boxes or so close as to not matter but now it seems that they can't get together on the size. I looked around for a while for my topper and found one that had been on a S10 that fit pretty good. The ones I looked at from nissan and ford were all too short. All yo can really do is measure your box and measure the topper when you look at it unless you find someone selling one from a 1st gen like yours. The other solution is a brand new one built for your truck but that is pretty pricey.

    Too many to list.
I have a Double-Cab 1st Generation and I tried 3 toppers before settling for one built for my truck... All were off by mere inches, but those inches meant the difference in the tailgate closing or not closing, or in weatherproof vs. non-weatherproof...

Drop the extra money and get the right fit, it will serve you better in the long run! :)

Give a scan of Craigslist as (apart from the sea of wheels and tyres for sale at least here) toppers/camper shells seem to come up pretty often at good prices.

You can also try calling around some of the local dealers. Some have second hand shells in stock and might have one to fit. Probably cost you more for one this direction though.

Be sure to check close for any cracks or damage on used ones and make sure all windows work correctly etc. Anything can be replaced or repaired, but then in the used market it really depends on what you are willing to spend to repair one compared to just waiting for another to come up. I've seen them here listed for "free pick it up" up to around $600 or so depending on what they fit etc. Seems though generally for this area they average around $200 to $350 or so.

As far as fit could not confirm for sure, but you should find them popping up off of Tacomas pretty regular. Just get one to match the gen and you should be over.
    Cheers

    Also something to consider:
The cab on the xtra-cab and regular cab are a bit different. The rear of the xtra-cab has a slight angle forward and the regular cab is more straight up/down. If you get a regular cab shell/topper you will have a larger gap at the top, where the shell and cab meet.

Good info on searching Craigslist. If you aren't in a big hurry, you will be able to find one in your area (or close to it). I found mine about 50 miles away for $200. It was in great condition.

Even if you find a topper from another truck that happens to fit the box dimensions, it's likely going to look stupid because the body lines are different for every truck and won't line up.

Unless you you want your truck to look like this:

Just get one made for your specific model.

Old forum but second get softtoppers fit first gens. Just putting this here for future viewers (this is my truck with a second gen topper). I have seen this is universal for extended and double cabs.
