Well...maybe I was wrong because I just filled up with 21.333gal.

Granted, I was just about empty and starting to sputter but I didn't think I could fit more than 21gal into a 21gal tank.
    Is the pump inaccurate?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You have gas in the tube. Running it that low will burn or damage the pump also.

Let's say the tube is 3' long by 2" ID. That would be 113³ inches which would be 0.489 gallons.

Interesting....and a nice calculation! Thank you. So at most, I had 0.156 gallons left in there!

And yes, I am aware that it is bad for the pump to be run dry. This was a pretty close call and not something I was trying to do. I was coasting into the station in N - which I also know is bad for the truck (something about oil circulation).

Or the pump was calibrated a little to the stations advantage. :D
I am sure that does not happen too often these days.
Close indeed on running out sounds like you had some luck on your side.

I know of one place near me that was running the pump calibration scam.

I was in a suburban, not running on empty (but the light had come on) and managed to fill up with 1.5 gallons more than the tank was supposed to hold...

Never went back to that place again. Most people would probably never notice either...

It's $3.69 here too. Add about a $1 to that for West Coast prices though.

LOL X2, Just on Friday. Didn't want to fill up cause I was leaving for a trip Friday after noon, So I waited. Hate driving with the light on. Makes me anxious.
From sounds of things, we will be there soon. I try not to think about it too much. Don't have a choice, have to buy gas.

Well...I do admit I let it run low because I get awesome fuel perks from grocery shopping at Giant Eagle ($0.10 off/gal for every $50 you spend in groceries). We also buy hundreds worth of gift cards when they have the $0.20/gal specials. It usually ends up being a free 30gal of gas. So I run low and bring my two 5-gallon gas cans with me to max out the 30gal.

We're buying a washing machine tonight at Lowes and will stop at Giant Eagle (next door) first to get $700 in gift cards. That will give us $1.40/gal in discounts - or $42 in savings on our next fill-up.

Saved over $1,000 in gas last year doing this.

Plus you buy the gift cards on a credit card that offers cash-back discounts and get another 5% back. Just keeps adding up!

Gassed up with ethanol free on Saturday, plus 3 gas cans at $3.73/gal. I like putting the ethanol free in the gas can for power equipment, motorcycles, chain saws and such...

That's debatable. I usually go 20-30 miles with the light on and have done that on every vehicle I've owned and have never burned out a fuel pump. 210K miles on my last car when I sold it ,150k on the car before that (totalled), and 106k on the taco currently. The only vehicles I've heard of having that sort of problem was mid 90's chevys. Don't you think the fuel running through the pump probably has more cooling effect than the fuel it's sitting in?
